There is so much junk in modern life, how did people fill the time in days gone by.

For example.
TV, social media, gaming, computers/tablet/phone without all these how would you spend your time?

I have been in hospital for about 10 days with my daughter this last month and wondered the same thing. Without my phone and silly timewaster apps/social media I think I would have gone crazy.

Talking to other people....bit of a lost art these days. I've also heard of something called reading but I didn't really partake in that. :p

People worked far more for one. both in their job and maintenance/cooking/cleaning around the house. Games, reading, talking etc.

Books - I did a lot of reading until about 1999 or so. Also spent more time planning or doing things that these days are irrelevant due to modern conveniences, etc.

Modern life in a nutshell:

I'm currently on trying to get myself away from city life and into the country, I'd like to run a farm somewhere and live out the rest of my days breathing in fresh air.

Pubs, working men's clubs and social clubs. I remember as a kid spending most of my weekends in a pub garden with a bottle of coke a packet of crisps and some broken biscuits

I read a lot books and played a lot of Amiga and Atari ST games. I also dated, made love and enjoyed life. Listening to music or watching films and TV. The internet didn't invent these things, they already existed but required more commitment to get.

Before TV , etc , before electric

Depends how far you go back but wasn't that long ago when all we had was candlelight / rubbish gas lanterns so dark nights meant early to bed (plus lots of children).

Although I remember the BBC had an article a while ago about how the whole 8 hours sleep thing came about and before it wasn't always 1 long sleep but split up, so people would do stuff in the early hours and then go back to bed. Will see if I can find it.

'Social media' is one of the biggest causes of the anti-social culture that is prevalent today imo.

People used to hang out and so stuff together, meet up round each other's houses, socialise down the pub, have hobbies, read and all sorts of other activities until everyone became glued to their phone. It annoys me sometimes that I end up stuck to mine so much.
Home tasks such as cleaning and laundry used to take a lot of time before modern machines that's you can just start up and leave to do their thing.
