So I finally dove in and flashed a modified 390 bios with tighter timings to all my 290's and a couple unexpected awesome things happened. The expected result was a nice performance boost at equivalent clockspeeds (mostly at 4k due to ram timings I'm assuming). The unexpected was cards run even cooler at same speed/ voltage and my clocks stay 100% locked without having to use another proggie in the background to force them :) WOOOOOOOO!

This ab pic is after a couple hours in GTA V online @ 4k mostly very high settings only grass on high and shadows on soft, fps capped at 60. Every other time I played before this bios setup I averaged 42 - 44c temps. I'm blown away and honestly don't know why they dropped so much. Only using 2 of my gpus since they aren't even maxing out :)

Sorry if this is of no interest. I am just super stoked that I've had these cards since launch and I'm still getting more out of them!!! WOOO!

Could you link to the bios's and another thread if you that's where you got them from because your results look great.

When you say RAM timings do you mean timings like CAS you have on normal system RAM? I never even thought about changing these on VRAM.
 
tried flashing my Tri-X with a 390 - plus VRAM timings mod bios

and all good so far - best 3dMark Extreme score I've ever had at 5670

@ 1160 / 1500 clocks

Can you link me to the bios file? I've also got a Tri-X and would like to give it a go.

Worth noting that there are 2 different tri-x cards. One uses the reference PCB, one uses a custom PCB. If you flash the wrong one it wont work (though you got dual bios, so not the end of the world I guess)
 
Tried this ages ago with my old MSI 290 Twin Frozr and couldn't get any 390 BIOS to boot unfortunately. Shame that all these old 290 models couldn't all just get a free BIOS upgrade to get a new lease of life, there's obviously something tweaked in the 390 that's transferable to most of the 290's, they're just milking with the newer model.

Enjoy the free performance though! :)
 
actually re-looking at thread I downloaded bios from I think it may just be a stock 290 Tri-X bios modified with tighter RAM timings

it certainly gave a boost though - may now try a 390 one to compare

For blackscreen fix try booting into safe mode (keep pressing F8 before windows starts for options) and removing drivers. I had a similar problem and removed Crimson drivers with DDU and reinstalled.

I just flashed my 290X with a modded Hynix 390X bios and actually get an extra couple of frames in Tombraider bench, from 55.8 to 57.6 @ clockspeed of 1125MHz. The temps seem to be about the same though.

When you download from their link it has a few folders. Make sure to pick the one with the proper memory for your card. One of my 290's is Elpida and the other two are Hynix. I used the MEM mod bios for the proper card mem type. Worked great :)
