Modifying a Modmic - Making it 'modular'

Hi guys.

After a bit of advice.

I bought myself a Modmic or use in conjunction with my Sennheiser HD 598 headphones. The cables that come with both of these are 3 meters in length.

I can certainly see the benefit in some situations to having cables of this length, but for me when just sat at the computer, they're just far too long.

Luckily the Sennheiser headphones have a removable cable and there are third party cables out there that are shorter. I got one these cables; a 1.5 meter one, that is much more suited to my needs.

Unfortunately the Modmic cable is not removable and the only way to make it more manageable is to coil half of it up and use cable ties to hold it in place.

Me being the perfectionist that I am, wants a better way of dealing with this.

What I propose is cutting the Modmic cable about 10cm below the mute switch.
I would then attach a female 3.5mm line jack socket to the end.

I can the either buy or make some cables of various lengths, each having a male 3.5mm plug on each end; one end plugs into the computer, the into the female socket I have attached to the Modmic.

Now, I don't know much about cables, but am more than sure that there are guides out there on how to correctly solder the wires etc, so I have no issues with actually doing it.

What I could do with some guidance on is what cable and socket/jacks I would need to be using.

Can I iust use the same cables you would use if you were making a speaker cable? Do the sockets and jacks need to be mono or stereo?

Just to be crystal clear; this is a PC microphone, not a professional recording microphone. I won't be using XLR (think that's what they're called) sockets or plugs. Just 3.5mm all the way.

I would appreciate any guidance and advice on what tools and materials I should be looking at getting to pull this off.

Many thanks.

I did have it braided. It kind of sorts the problem but it's not very elegant and it easily snags on stuff.

Being able to shorten the cable as per my idea would be a hundred times better... At least for me :)

I would love photos of it if you do take it apart so I could assess what to do with mine.

I was thinking of going past the mute tbh as I don't use the mute at all. did you just braid/heat shrink it as is?

If I do do it, I'll try and remember to get some snaps of it for you.

Wouldn't mind knowing myself lol. I still need to know what cable I would need to use if I were to go ahead with what I want to do.

As far as I can tell, a normal stereo speaker cable would do the job, but could do with some clarification really before I start hacking a £40 microphone to bits :)

When I did braid it went from 4-5cm below the mute switch. I left another 4-5cm at the plug end too.

I would ask on a more suitable forum such as diyaudio.com if nobody here can answer. Your project sounds pretty small and easy to do so I'm sure plenty of people will be able to help
