moding vapochill ls

So i saw someone on here run a bone stock vapols on a q6600 and than a i7 and it seemed to work ok. i currently have a q6600 and will prolly be stepping up to a I7 soon. my question is, other than changing the fan out what els can i do to help it cool high wattage cpus. also does anyone have some pics of how they mounted the cooling head to a lga 775 and a lga 1366.

Ok so i know a user on here by the name of carlos has a stock vapo on a i7 and used to be on a q6600. there is no PMing on this board.....so i guess im calling him out :cool:

. Im just curious if he or anyone els has done anything to these units at all to run on i7s or core2 quads, does even changing the fan on the condenser even help that much?????? anyone know of some good guides for insulating, i really dont want to use the heater pads i think they are a little bass aackwards but i understand their purpose.

there has to be some phase change peeps on here :rolleyes:

If you click on trust you can look up the users email address,however I seem to remember that the general consensus was that for the vaporchill ls to be effective you would need to modify it, however this may have changed given the latest batch of Sandy Bridge chips being more energy efficient.

Changing the fan on a phase unit will have very little effect, they have to be heavily modified to hold temperature at higher wattage by reducing the length of the capillary tube. This shouldn't be done unless you know what your doing as it involves draining the refrigerant gas from the unit (Some refrigerants are illegal to vent to atmosphere) then the unit has to be pulled to a vacuum and regassed ( Usually R290/Propane) and finally pulled down to a very low pressure (IIRC 0.8psi).

I'm by no means an expert on the subject this is all based on research which was confirmed after chatting to a HVAC engineer that was servicing the chillers and freezers at work.

frozennova is right on the money.

A bone stock Vapochill LS won't handle quad core overclocking very well, at least this is what I've heard also (xtremesystems.org).

Im looking for someone to mod my chiller if anyone wants to take the job.
I have been told poss a regas and tube mod will do it.

I'm sure you could do amazing things with the vapochill on the i7 2600k, would be nice to see what kind of clock you could get on it with that.

From what i have seen all SB CPUs top out about 5.5 no matter what cooling you have.

Maximum multi of the cpu is 57 so 6ghz is pretty much out of the window as 103bclk+ will kill not only the cpu but the boards too. 5.6ghz has been done on air however...

1.385v + on the cpu will cause damage to the cpu over a set length of time. 1.5v on the memory is recommended with 1.65v also potentially causing damage to the cpu.

An SS as such is a waste of time on the SB chips.

fair enough mate but you sound like you think thats not very good, in my eyes 5.5Ghz is a rapid clock speed. Even though it max's out at 5.5 I was more wondering about how good the vapo chill would do with temps, I bet you could get some nice temps with one of those, running sub-zero @ 5.5Ghz, thats pretty impessive if you ask me. Also would improve the longevity.

ITs unreal you norm need LN2 to get to those speeds.

I will tell you when the Z mobos come out. Not going to bother till thay show up.

i know someon that does basic ac service and could vac and recharge my unit. it currently has r507 which i think is one of the better ones other than blending. i know the basic ops of a phase change system, are there any guides as far as moding them?? does anyone know of someone that could mod these units to put up with todays cpus? i just would like to mount this on my q6600 so i can get some exp in with this type of cooling b4 i go throwing it on a new rig. i have been eyeing out these new 2600ks. even @5ghz on a daily rig would be amazing, 6ghz would be just stupid but awesome

I believe members over at Xtremesystems make mount kits for Vapochill units for modern sockets.

Unless you know somebody with a vacuum pump, a set of HVAC vacuum gauges and then your refrigerant gas. R507 can't be bought in small quanties and is quite expensive when compared to R290 (Propane).

R290 is more efficent and will put less strain on the compressor due to being lighter as well as needing ~40%
