Monday Night Combat coming to PC, 17 Jan 2011

Game seems to be rather buggy.

It's crashed a few times, some times it loads up to nothing but a black screen, some times it won't list any servers.

A friend is trying to play the game but it's stuck on the splash screen.

Not impressed.

Yeh i had a bunch of problems too. The server browser is like a temperamental old car. Also i seem to only connect to maybe 1/5 of every servers i try. Couldnt set up any games with friends when i was first trying it, like hosting on my computer. They are a very small devs though.

Yeah the server browser really didn't work too well. Got annoying when it reset the gamemode filter to Crossfire every time too.

Still, can't say the game itself was too great. The first Blitz game i joined wasn't bad, but after that every game i joined always seemed to be modded to ridiculous extremes so we'd never make it past the first few waves. Crossfire got very boring very quickly when you realised 75% of kills were caused by Assassin grapples and the only way to push into a base was to juice up an explosives guy and blow up the turrets (hoping you didn't get assassinated). Bit of a 1 trick pony.

People need to give the game a chance in all honesty. I've got 155 hours on MNC and everything which has been said so far isn't really a problem once you learn how to play the classes and get to grips with the objectives. In the first couple of hours i too was "Assassins are OP" amongst other things, but once i knew my way around the basics, half of the things i had worried about vanished completely and the other half fizzled away as i got more experience. It's a great game but people have to want to jump over the first hurdle before it really shines. It's a very steep learning curve if you've only played for an hour.

Assassins are so easy to find and kill when you know what to look out for. They are glass cannons and very loud ones at that; the cloak gives off a very noticeable sound (it hums) and can be heard from a good distance away. If you wear a headset then you can even tell where it is coming from before the Assassin is anywhere near you. I have often heard this sound, turned on the spot, and fired in the general direction which more often than not has grazed the target and after that it's just a case of killing them before they can rush escape.

Assassins are great for new players because they can pick off other new players quite easily, but once those people know how the classes work then the newbie Assassins don't stand a chance. Even jumping can stop an Assassin in their tracks, trust me when i say there are many counters to that class.

As for Juice it can be stopped if, yet again, you know how. A lot of classes have throw grapples and charges, so knocking them off the map is often the best way to stop a Juice rush and it's a lot easier than you might think too. Most people think they are invulnerable but i've seen several Juiced players go down through concentrated fire-power, turrets going crazy on them, etc. It gives you a boost, yes, but only for 10 seconds and during those 10 seconds you can still take a ton of damage and be effectively shut-down.

Lastly, the browser. With the influx of players over the free weekend the browser simply stressed out and buggered up; had something like 20 people trying to fill a 1 player slot on every server available, which clogged up the entire thing. Said issue has been resolved now and all is back to normal.

Its not much of a tactic really, but if i was gunner you could survive one grapple pretty much (from the front) and then do a slam and just shoot the assassin down. I also found most assassins like to attack me as support after id put my firebase down, thus condemning them to death anyway. They are frustrating, but there were ways around it. Personally a bigger problem is too many people playing assassin, some kind of class cap would've been appreciated.

I'm not sure if i would buy, but only based on the fact that most of the people i played with didnt like and were put off with front end bugs rather than gameplay. It was nigh on impossible for me to get myself and 2 others into the same game, let alone the same team. :(

Class limits, amongst a ton of other options, are down to the server owners unfortunately. A team usually needs 1 Sin, 2 is fine in some cirumstances, but 3 is just silly. With that many on a 6-player side you are either going to do well if those 3 players are really good, or fail miserably (most likely the later). That said, the free weekend brought in a lot of new players and most of those new players went Sin, Sniper, or Gunner, which is why those 3 classes were seen a lot more than the rest. In actuality, all 6 classes are usually given a fair share of the action and you rarely see a team filled with a ton of the same class.

On the subject of Sins, nothing more satisfying than firing a Support's Shotgun in the face of one when they assume you would be an easy target. :P

That isn't so much a bug, rather new players filling every perceivable gap. Since the free weekend i've had trouble trying to get into a game myself, let alone my friend which i usually play with! The free weekend was a success, but because of that there were less player slots than there were people, so everyone was bustling to get into the same server and fill that same gap in the team. Like with the class example before, this is usually not a problem outside of the weekend just passed.

This is the main MP game I'm playing at the moment. If anyone fancies a game, here's my Steam page so add me as a friend if you want a few games. Let me know you are from OcUK when you do though so I know you're not just some random. :p

I haven't played it that much (just over 20 hours according to Steam), but I do quite well for myself I think due to my experience in other shooter games. I pretty much exclusively play assault, but occasionally I'll play sniper or one of the other classes.

Hopefully I'll see some of you in game soon. :)

In answer to avoiding assassins, a combination of listening for their cloak noise and staying in the air as much as I can when I think I'm in danger (dashing away and grappling helps as well as assault) serves me well. I could really do better in this area though, but I think this is really just because I lack a bit of experience.
