Mondeo 2.5T Overheating at Idle

I'm still running my 57 plate Mondeo 2.5T. Until today, it has been running great since the engine rebuild 4 years ago.

Today I went on a short motorway journey followed by idling for 5-10 mins whilst picking something up, and the engine temp at idle started increasing. Not to the red zone, but over half way there compared to normal. Once I started driving again, the temp rapidly came back down to normal.

First time this has happened. I'll probably take it over to Rotherham for the guy who did the rebuild to take a look at - he really knows these engines. I know we have a few 2.5T owners on here - any known issues? Any other ideas?

Daft question I know, but is the radiator fan coming on?

The only time I’ve experienced the same was in my Leon Cupra R about 12 years ago! I’d just driven from Manchester to Southampton without a hitch, left the motorway and in the slow moving traffic the car started to overheat. Turns out the fan fuse had blown and I had no cooling other than forced airflow by the act of driving forwards!

Not sure if it's the same setup however I just bought a MK4 2.0 diesel and a common fault is the pwm wire corroding for the rad fan which stops it running. Loom is likely different though so might not be that. The fans and the control modules can fail too thout, sticking 12v on it will rule out the fan but not sure if you can test the module but it will throw a code for a proper Ford code reader to see (a generic Bluetooth one might not see all the cars modules to get all codes).

Yep, it's just the radiator fan, thanks guys. There's a known issue with these failing due to a corroded control wire on the Mondeo. It's likely to be that as the OBD codes match.

The purple wire? Just had mine repaired, they can appear fine but actually be very brittle and pull apart because they're corroded. Had it fixed it for about £40.

Yeah, I think it's very likely to be the purple wire but not confirmed yet. Thanks for mentioning how much you had yours fixed for, that helps! I'll take it to a car electrician nearby who were good and reasonably priced with a previous issue.
