Mondeo Titanium X - What to look out for

Tempted to get a Mondeo Titanium X, had one as a courtesy car a few years back and found it a great car and now they seem to be well within my budget.

Looking at spending upto £10k which may get me a facelift, but would prefer a bit less which should get me a Late model pre-facelift with lowish milege.

Is there anything to look out for with these?

I hate car dealers with a passion as no matter which ones I look at they seem to have some horror story reviews, but since I would ideally like to px my car I am limited unfortunately :( so I want to make sure I can keep my eye out for any known issues with these.

Thanks

Richard

Pity you're not looking a few weeks later. I'll be selling my 2009 Mondeo Titanium X Sport when I get my lease car.

Cracking car. The only things mine has needed in the 18 months I've had it is rear trailing arm bushes done and glow plugs.

SparkyMark, I am in no rush as I'm on holiday in 2 weeks so unless something special pops up in the meantime I would wait till I'm back. PM some details if you want :)

Whilst I'm normally an advocate of petrol over diesel, the only decent petrol engines available with the mk4 Mondeo are the thirsty 2.5T (up to 2010) and the 2.0T Ecoboost (2010 onwards). The 1.6 Ecoboost is good also but not easily available in higher specs. Therefore if you're doing reasonably high mileage, the diesels aren't a bad call since they're known to be pretty reliable - certainly a lot more so than they were in the mk3 Mondeo. Dual mass flywheels can fail, but that's not an uncommon diesel issue in general. The 2.0 TDCI is the one to go for really, as it's a decent blend of power and economy in either 140 or 163bhp guise, whereas the 1.8 is fairly gutless, and the 2.2 isn't particularly economical.

Your budget will easily get you a nice low mileage 2.0 Ecoboost (petrol turbo) Titanium X Sport. TitX Sport is the highest spec available and has plenty of kit as standard, with commonly-available options including navigation, keyless entry, and electric seats.

There isn't a great deal to look out for over and above the usual used car checks, but the rear trailing arm bushes are a common failure, and check that the power steering isn't too whiny.

I bought the wife a 163 diesel titanium X sport a couple of years ago.

Its a good car, only thing that I find with it is it's a little on the heavy side if you want to get a shuffle on.

Other than that, no issues.

I have a 12 plate, 1.6 Ecoboost petrol Mondeo - I get roughly 41mpg out of it which isn't too bad. Playing with the turbo in 3rd gear is quite fun :) No parts needed apart from normal service parts for me upto now.

Another 1.6 Ecoboost owner here.

The car isn't what I'd call fast, but the engine feels torquey enough to get the car hustled along quite nicely, and you rarely feel like the engine is too small. There is some annoying torque management going on; 1st and 2nd are limited so 3rd feels like it pulls harder. Then there's also a 30Nm overboost between 1500-4000 rpm. It's quite useful for 3rd gear overtakes and is also helpful at motorway speeds in 6th. The unpredictable non-linear power delivery does get on my nerves though.

Economy wise, I do a 20-mile 50-minute commute to work across A and B roads, with 20 minutes stop-start at the beginning and 10-minutes stop-start in the middle. Over the last 10 fuel-ups miles I've averaged 37.1mpg according to Fuelly. I'm sure the diesel would average better, but I can't stand the 4-cyl diesel dag-dag, and the Ecoboost is nice and smooth and quiet.

My MRS has a titanium X with the 2.0 140 diesel. Plenty of kit and soaks up the miles with no trouble at all. Feels slightly under powered though. So far in the last 12 months it's needed nothing above the usual service.
