Mondeo vibration

Hey there,

If some of those Mk2 Mondeo owners could help me out that would be great. I've got a 2000 Zetec 1.8 that starts vibrating at about 80mph and I get the feeling that it may be that the bushes (or some other part of the suspension?) is in need of replacement.

The vibration can be felt through most of the car and would definitely be classed as annoying. Does anyone know the likely culprit and cost to fix before I start calling my mechanic?

Yep, the steering wheel vibrates too.

So, check the front wishbone bushes and check the wheels condition and balance. How about the tracking?

Would warped disc brakes cause a problem during normal running or only during braking?

edit: I was also just out in the snow finding the blown fuse I was sure was there. What's a good place to get spade type fuses? Presumably Half*rds will rip me off, will my dealer sell me a couple cheap?

Had the wheels balanced in pairs. Doing the front didn't seem to make much difference, but doing the back has made all the difference. I've been up to 90 indicated (middle of night, empty motorway) without any annoying vibration - motorway driving is now as relaxing as it should be.

However whoever fitted the rear tyres should be shot for being an incompetent spanner monkey for failing to balance them properly - and I know there was some attempt made as there were weights attached. How a "trained" employee can possibly get it wrong with the quality equipment now available at all garages is astonishing.

Had it done at a wee independent tyre place for 4.50 a tyre, the guy asked me to come back in a couple of weeks too and he'd give me an opinion based on any tyre wear of whether the bushes do or do not look like they've worn.

Also found a place (CLCM) that will do a proper geometric alignment for 47pounds in edinburgh. Will go to him after I'm satisfied I don't need to replace any (more?) suspension parts. Compared to the 50 quid I was quoted by kwikfit to adjust the toe alignment on all four wheels, and the fact that most places just refuse to adjust the rear wheels at all, not that I'd want them to I think if they don't know how.

ONSLAUGHT:
CLCM don't have a website. As far as I know it's just a one man business, and I don't think he needs to advertise too widely as the performance car dealers know where he is. Don't go down there and expect to be seen immediately or anything. When I went down to speak to him on Thursday his next available space was Tuesday.

When I did a search on google I came up with posts on performance car owners club forums and according to them (I didn't think to ask him in person) he gets lots of business from the local Aston Martin dealership.

I wouldn't have thought that wheel balance vibration problems would be affected by the engine speed. If the car starts vibrating at 3.5k rpms in second gear then surely it's a different problem.
