Monetization of gaming content

Griffith added that Activision "plans to increase online monetization" with CoD5, offering "3x the amount of content available for download and premium content called 'Day One Advantage.'"
God, reading that article just made me cringe. I can see it now, most players will spawn with a rope, a piece of chewing gum and a box of cigarettes, and then meet the guy who's spent $4.99 on a rocket launcher..

"time to kick ass and chew bubblegum"

In other words, pay the full retail price - and then a bit more. **** off, no buy from me, take your repetitive and shallow Call of Duty somewhere else.

In the hands of Macgyver, the rope, piece of chewing gum and a box of cigarettes is all a person will need to take on a person with a rocket launcher. Im sure people will be able to cope fine without having to buy this additional content.

Wait a minute, so people have to buy martydom? They are going to make so much money, since that's the only way most people get kills.

I'm all for progress but this is one precedent I'd rather not witness. I do sometimes find myself saying a private thanks to the map designers when I play really cool new one thats been released as part of a patch, but this is just smelly. Kind of reminds me of gamesworkshop 40k battles. Got bigga gunz??? gonna win the match :D

The Day one content is only a high-level rifle for people who pre-order, or a LMG for those who pay extra to get the collectors edition. Most hardcore gamers could unlock these within the first day or two of playing anyway if its as easy to level as CoD4, and casual gamers within a few weeks. Its not as big of an advantage as people make it out to be, since unlocked weapons are not always more powerfull then the starting weapons, sometimes they are just different, like in CoD4 the starter LMG had a much faster fire rate and better accuracy then the first unlocked LMG, but less dmg.

For many years games have been giving out special ingame stuff to people who pay for a collectors edition of a game. This is not something new.

Activision also announced that for Call of Duty 6 they will be going back to Infinity Ward for development, the company who developed the first, second, and fourth offerings in the series
