Anyone else considering this next year? A mate of mine and I are, but we're unsure of what vehicle we would do it in. Obviously we want something that costs next to nothing, is kind of reliable (in the sense that it won't require much work, although a wee bit along the way is fine) and most importantly quirky.

I want something reeeaaally crap, but then in a sense I keep thinking defender. I know a defender would be hell to drive that far but it could be useful rescuing other people. Plus, the advantage of a defender would be my Uncle would either supply one for promo purposes (which defeats both the quirky option and the ability to alter the look of it, not forgetting reliability) or we would get an ancient cheap as chips.

What would you drive? I'm of the understanding it's got some rough terrain to handle, so bear that in mind! ;)

I think the car has to be 1000cc or smaller, so a Defender would be slightly above that...

And you need about a month to do it, personally unless you're dead serious about this then forget about it now cause its very very hard work and a heck of a lot of planning, not to mention the danger on route.

Cinquecento sx 899cc. Fairly modern and if they are good enough for rallying (trofeo) they will be good enough for a Mongol. Plus passing through Poland you can pick up billions of spares on the cheap. Either that or smoke the competition in a charade GTTi  .

surely something 4x4 would be more suitable

old fiat panda 4x4 - 998cc of raw power. :D

its a real shame to get rid of more fiat panda 4x4s from the british roads :( the only car that made it intact last year was a daihatsu - although i doubt you'll get a fun one for £100 they should stay together pretty well :)

Good point - for some reason, I'd just been reading the student gumball where they had scrapped their own 2000cc limit and for some reason got the two mixed up when thinking about this. Doh!

Very serious. We're both students so will have the Summer off, that's the time issue covered. My mate works placements during term so money will be OK I imagine and I will going into a job so whatever money we spend will soon be made back. Obviously it's quite a dangerous mission, but then that's the fun. If it was easy as pie and not even a hint of danger, where would the rush be? Sure, I could drive across Europe and see the sights, but it's not quite the same IMO. Cheers for the advice though and it's something I will seriously consider before the time comes.

I like youre suggestions CaneyJ & TomO, I'll check them out then :D I quite like the idea of a small engined ice cream van :/
