I'm currently running 4770k @ 4.something

When I built the machine I originally had SLi 670's, as the 7-series didnt give enough of a performance improvement to warrant the extra money imo.

As it turns out, I didn't make much use of the SLi setup, and sold one of the cards. That single 670 has done me well for a year. I've since upgraded to a 970, which, although I'm not benchmark hungry by any means, is a very solid upgrade.

I also have been using a BenQ-Somethingorother (1080) 144hz screen for a year, which is lovely and fluid, although, FWIW I doubt I've been getting anywhere near triple figure FPS on the vast majority of games I've played.

I'm now beginning to think to go back to 60hz. But 1440p. I find myself being increasingly critical of the quality/colour of 1080 on a tn panel. I think I've come to prefer how nice things look, as oppose to how smooth they are, and despite playing with colour/temperature/brightness settings, and although being 110% better than my monitors presets, its still a TN panel, and still, wishy-washy.

A 1440p monitor would give me better colours, a higher resolution, and a slightly bigger screen. I'd also be tempted to pick up another 970, to ensure I avoided any performance dips, and pay more attention to my overclock, as the 4770 is under a h100i, so could no doubt be pushed further.

Having said that...

I just cant make my mind up.

1440p monitors aren't cheap, and now there are 144hz 1440p panels (although afaik TN) Theres also super-widescreen 2560x1080, which I like the look of, but seem to have questionable game support, and even more questionable performance, with lots of lag and ghosting. I would even consider multi-monitors.

So, Im completely at a loss at which direction to take.

Any suggestions?

Forgot to mention, I havent set myself a budget as such, but at the same time, dont want to be paying over the odds!

Sorry thats a bit vague!

Monitor(s) would predominantly be used for gaming.

If you find yourself being critical of the quality of tn panels, you may want to look in to and ips or other similar panel that has better colour accuracy.

Heres an interesting comparison (2mins in) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjmCKbhARJg

A wqhd panel would not necessarily give you better colour reproduction, but a higher ppi density, and more screen real estate.

I think it mainly depends on what your using the monitor for, and whats most important to you.

I would double check benchmarks, but im sure the majority of current games would be a decent frame rate with 1 970 at 1440. How long this will stay true though? dunno.
If it ever becomes not ok, you can either upgrade the card, SLI or run at 1080, and let it be upscaled to fit your monitor.

1440s are actually quite an ok price, especially with 4k on the rise. The ultra-widescreen monitors are only supported in certain games, so be careful here.

The colour reproduction on some of the new and more expensive tn panels actually have quite a low average deltaE for tns. Again it depends what else you may be using the monitor for, whats important to you and what games you might be playing.
