Hi all. 3 years ago this forum helped me build a great machine for my son. It’s certainly had its moneys worth - he uses it constantly! Too much in my book!
As for all teenage lads (and probably most on here) he is obsessed with specs. His main game is Fortnite and he is maxing out at 144-160fps. I think the reason is 2 fold:

1. His monitor is 144hz
2. His GPU may be underpowered. To get 144fps the graphics settings on the game are low-medium.

What’s the best suggestion to get to his holy grail of 240fps without killing the quality settings? Just a 240hz monitor? Need a better GPU?

Current specs:
AMD RYZEN 5 3600
AMD 5600 RX GPU
16GB RAM
IIYAMA G Master GB3366WQSU
MSI MOTHERBOARD

Sound just like teenage E-peen to me.

From reading a better cpu will be very meaningful. You wil need to check that the board can support a 5*** series cpu and update the bios to do so first. The best cpu is a 5800X3D but a 5600/5700/5800 will also be a big upgrade.

A good GPU upgrade would be a 6700xt. It should e eabout 50% faster then the 5600rx. He should be able to up the quality settings and still play at 144+

To get to 240 he will need a 240hz monitor and a much more powerful card so you pushing towards a grand upgrade if he want to play in higher than low-meduim

Thanks for the reply. Think I’ve managed to stem the “need” for this 240fps. To be honest, watching too many gamers on YouTube is the reason for this.

I basically checked his settings, performed an O/C on CPU and GPU, showed him how to put in performance mode and play in a mere 1080. He gets 220-240fps. Christ knows why he likes this, he has a lovely super wide screen he now plays windowed on low settings

Convinced him to save his money and wait till he starts playing other more “heavy duty” games that really will need more horsepower.
