Hi there guys,

I am looking to buy a new monitor. Main use will be gaming and the rest surfing the net and doing the odd job in Work, Excel, etc ... I have nailed it down to three monitors:

NEC 20WGX2
Dell 2407WFP
Dell 2407WFP-HC

I would really like the first one (even second hand) but I find its price new a bit ridiculous (£310) when I can find a Dell 2407WFP for £360 New (I know, its a bit lower than here, its an offer I have). The HC version is tempting too but I wouldn't be able to have that for less than £400. Do you reckon I should have until just before Xmas or after Xmas or just buy one now? Also, if you had to buy one of those monitors for my priorities which one would it be?

Thanks a lot!

I think it would depend on a few things:

Are you a casual gamer? Or is it really important that you get exceptional gaming performance.

Do you do a lot of image editing/ is it important that your screen has a wide colour gamut?

Take your current system specification into consideration when choosing between 20/24" screens.

Personally: I went for the dell 2407 wfp 2 months ago, im only a casual gamer, id much rather have the higher resolution/ extra working space/ screen size than extra gaming performance. As i hardly do any image/ colour manipulation work the hc variant wasn't really required as i knew it would be at a higher premium also. The dell also allows me to hook up my xbox 360 .

I am a big gamer and everything else to be honest is not as important. I do a bit of image editing and 3D max but not that much. PC Gaming is first in the list of my priorities.

Go for the 2407WFP unless you can get a NEC 20WGX2 second hand. Like you said, although they are fantastic monitors, you are near to 24" prices and they hardly seem worth the asking price at the moment.

It would be nice if NEC dropped them to around £200.00 but I doubt that they will.

I managed to get my NEC last week on the bay for £120 and the week before there was one sold for £175. And it is as fantastic as everybody says it is.

Either wait around and hope another one comes up cheap or buy the Dell now IMO.

The dell price seems to fluctuate quite a lot, i saw the same monitor here less than £400 a few weeks ago. Shop around and get the monitor for around £400 (which is what i did) and you won't regret it.

Also consider the Samsung 215TW

This is a beaut of a 21" screen with a S-PVA samsung panel (no panel lottery)

IMO you won't miss the 1" compared to the 22" TN film panels and I would much rather have the better quality screen.

And can be had for a bargain £170 on the net at the moment.

mate, please don't post the exact same thing in every thread! It looks very much like you're spamming the place! :)

SOrry.....I just remembered about the Samsung which I would have bought if I hadn't got the NEC.:o

A lot of people forget about it been the only (i think) 21" widescreen monitor out there and you must admit, it is a quality monitor with none of the problems the 22" screens have.

Don't know.......it seemed to apply to a lot of threads

I should have typed it up different for each thread rather than cut and paste.

You might not have noticed then.....:p

Got the dell 2407, great monitor so i can recommend that, great if your connecting to Xbox / PS3 too.

What do you mean by problems, i am thinking of buying a 22 inch hyundai monitor?

Nothing too bad, just the usual problems with TN-film panels ie colour match, viewing angles etc.

If you look at the sticky threads on here you will see the differences between screen types.

Personally, I prefer the crispness, viewing angles, colours that the 20" and 21" screens have over the extra size you get with the 22" screens.

Don't forget the 22" screens are the same resolution as the 20" screens so you are just getting bigger pixels.

IMO you either get a 20" or a 24" (resolution increases) and stay away from the 22" screens but at the end of the day it's personal choice.
