Hey,

I need to get a new monitor as my old CRT is about to explode. I have a £300 budget and need a tft that:

more than or equal to 20"
high contrast
high brightness
and maybe Anti-Glare...damm sun.
don't mind if it's wide screen or not

I do a lot of 3D/Graphics work so I need one that has a very good contrast and brightness. It'll only be me viewing the monitor so viewing angles aren't an issue. The Belinea monitor, the new one coming in ( 22" ) is currently top of my list, but I heard people say something about the film it uses, will what it uses ( TN is it? ) be ok for what I require?

The belinea 22" is good quality but I just read a review of the Iiyama E2200WS which uses the same panel, if you do a search you should be able to read up on it.

For graphics work, maybe a 24 bit panel would be better, which rules out most of the TN screens apart from the Samsung I believe. The Samsung still has the poor viewing angles though. Might be good idea to steer clear of all TN panels actually for that reason. If colour accuracy is going to be important then you don't want a colour gradient from the top to the bottom of the screen caused by viewing angles.

Brightness wise just about every TFT released in the last 3 years will go bright enough to hurt your eyes if you really want it to, so nothing to worry about there no matter which you pick.

As for contrast, they're mostly around the 800:1 range. Only the 21" Samsung has a noticeably better contrast ratio at 1000:1 but that's likely to be out of your budget.

Take a look at the Dell 2007WFP, the Dell 2007FP and the NEC LCD20WGX2. No competitor talk please!

I just noticed that the Dell2007FP isn't widescreen 20"!, anyone know what panel it uses?

you can check panels here ;) It uses either 20" LG.Philips S-IPS (LM201U04) or Samsung S-PVA (LTM201U1)

Thanks for the replies,

I think I've managed to get it down to these:

- Viewsonic VX2235wm 22" Widescreen - A little over budget, but seems very good

- Viewsonic VX2025wm 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Silver/Black - though with it being 20" and Widescreen I feel as if I will loose a lot of horizontal space

- Viewsonic VG2021m 20" LCD Monitor - Black - Contrast rate isn't as high as the others

- Belinea 2225S1W 22" Widescreen LCD - No idea what it's like, but it's the cheapest and the specs look great

well on the one hand you have a couple of larger screens there in the 22" range. These might offer some improved immersion for gaming and movies, but remember they still only offer the same res as a 20" model. One thing to note is that they both use TN Film technology. The only one in that list which doesn't is the VX2025WM, and it might be worth considering with it's P-MVA panel. Have a look at what the panel technologie can offer here :)(

Thanks Badass, will I loose much horizontal space due to it be 20" and widescreen though?

Edit - well I wont loose any as it's the same res, but will it look/feel weird?

what do you have now? I think a 20"WS is a very nice size monitor really tbh, good size and resolution for a whole range of uses

17" CRT that's about to explode, I actually just looked at the display area of the 2025 and it's ..... pretty darn big!

Hiya I have actually had a simlar concern in that the height might be too small, obviously baddass is the tft expert :), but has anyone else got any views on this?

I have a Viewsonic VX2025wm and I can't fault it. Its a superb monitor and can stand anything you throw at it. It also has a lot better colour correctness as standard than the Belinea (the viewsonic is an updated version of the same panel).

I use it for PS, videos and general browsing/typing.
