Monitor Colour Boost question.

I use a 24" AOC Full HD monitor for Xbox 360 gaming. I have been tweeking my monitor lately and I noticed a setting on my monitor called colour boost.

I don't know anything technical about monitors so I'm not quite sure how it works, however when I set it to auto the colors seem much more vibrant and if I switch back to default, eventhing looks quite washed out.

I looked at the AOC site and it said this about color boost when it's set on auto and full.

Auto Detect: When “Auto Detect” is turned on, every pigment will be detected and self-adjusted to render a lively picture.

Full Enhance: When "Full Enhance" is turned on, the color saturation of the entire screen is fully enriched, thus all colors become more vibrant.

There are other settings for it such as 'Green field, sky blue' etc etc.

Which would be the best setting for gaming? Auto or Full enhance?

Is there any reason at all not to have colour boost on at all?

Cheers

It works in a similar way to Nvidia's 'Digital Vibrance' which you may have heard of. It basically increases the saturation values of all colours outputted by the monitor in order to make things appear more vibrant. Although this can appear attractive at first it also affects pastel shades and more muted shades by making them appear unnaturally vibrant. In effect it can make things look less natural and reduce the range of colours outputted. It is a bit like what you get if you use a broad gamut monitor on an application that doesn't natively support that range of colours - except the range and more subtle shades are crushed to a much greater extent and the upper-end colours aren't as vibrant as a broad-gamut monitor can output. Really though you should use the settings that look best to you - and you may find you prefer different settings for different game titles.

Thanks for the explanation. Much appreciated. I think I'll keep it on auto for now. I've only compared default settings and colour boost settings on RDR and Fifa 11, but with colour boost they're much better to look at.

Cheers
