So...

I really want a 27" monitor right now, and am also looking to upgrade my system in the next couple of months. After being scared off the Hazros figured i'd just plump down for a Hanns G now and upgrade the monitor in a year or two once we get the cheap 120ms 27" gold-plated Dell *cough*.

Question 1: The thread on the Hanns G 27.5" kind of finishes undecided on whether they are any good - I am not looking for great, im looking for average gaming at 1920x1200 with my aging spec on not very demanding games - WoW, Left4Dead2, CSS and SC2 mostly. Anyone had any experience with these now they have had some time to settle in?

Question 2: I might hold off if I thought the SA850 was going to be out anytime soon and if it was going to be reasonably priced - £400-500 range. I think thats unlikely, any thoughts?

Cheers.

Just to pick up on that point. Some information has emerged (after a lot of persistence) that the SA750 and SA950 should be released in May ('starting from' a rather steep $599 - so realistically £450+). It has been extremely difficult to extract any such information from Samsung and their PR departments about the SA850. Based on this I would say that a summer release is looking quite likely and as far as price goes I would expect the SA850 to cost in excess of £650. The 24 inch 'version' may be within your budget but that's not really what you are looking for.

As your primary use appears to be gaming I would have a careful think about whether you actually want or need a resolution beyond 1920 x 1080. If the extra resolution is intended for extra desktop space when not gaming then fine, but remember that the majority of games scale their FOV in such a way that 1920 x 1200 gives no real advantage in the vertical aspect and a disadvantage in the horizontal aspect.

^^ They were officially launched in the US today but there is still no word on what to expect in the UK. They haven't reached full retail availability in the US yet by any stretch of the imagination. Hopefully soon!

@wingZero

The PLS technology (Plane to Line Switching) refers to an alternative panel arrangement which is supposed to be similar (possibly superior) to IPS. Seeing as IPS is largely manufactured by Samsung's big monitor rival LG this could introduce some healthy competition.

And equally more expensive:(.

As you stated samsung SA850 may well cost £650.

I think my new monitor is going to be Samsung BX2450 for gaming:cool:

I would prefer 1920x1080 or 2560x1440 for games because of wider Field Of Vision. Here an example from Starcraft 2.

Well that is the initial price I would expect - but I'm also hoping to see the technology adopted more widely not too long after. It is purely speculation and Samsung may surprise us with the price - PLS technology is supposed to be cheaper to produce than equivilent IPS technologies. The SA850 will be a unique product and if they get the screen coating right and the nice metal housing is as I expect they will have the 'U2711H alternative' market under their thumbs. Samsung are usually quite consistent with their panel quality which is always a bonus.

And the Samsung BX2450 is an exceptional all-rounder in my opinion and I don't think you'd be disappointed with it.

Yup I like the monitor.

Does Samsung BX2450 have internal speakers? If I connect PS3 to BX2450, how can I hear the sound? Also it doesn't have DVI port does it? It only seems to come with 2 x HDMI ports and 1 VGA port.

Also PCM2, can you provide me any link in my trust from where I can get the cheapest Samsung BX2450. It seems to have gone above £200 mark.

The BX2450 includes an audio out socket which is where the sound is routed out to (you should be able to plug in a pair of stereo speakers here no problem). The monitor does indeed feature two HDMI ports and no DVI - but Samsung includes a DVI out to HDMI in cable in the box which seems to work well. Unfortunately the BX2450 appears to be £230+ at the moment no matter where you look. The price has been fluctuating a bit recently so I'm hoping it can come down a bit shortly - especially once the SA350 and SA550 series lands (the relatively cheap 60Hz ones).

Cheers for the info:cool:

As I have a Radeon HD5850 card, the BX2450 will go nicely with my setup whether I use HDMI cable or DVI to HDMI cable as my 5850 contains both ports :).

I've had a Dell U2711 for 3 days now and its fantastic. 2560 x 1440 res is awesome for gaming (if a bit slow on my 5770) HL 2 with Fakefactory mod in 1440p is stunning.

So much more desktop with 2560 res, colours are fantastic. This definately makes stuff like Photoshop and Live 8 easier to work with

I am tempted to remove the anti glare film coating but I know ill end up bodging up a screen I paid £590 for. Its not really noticable, unless looking for it on white backgrounds

Hmm much food for thought again, thanks for that (especially PCM2). Might just have to think about upping my budget and going all out on a U2711 and a heavy upgrade / total re-do of my spec.

Are IPS black levels not as good as hdtv? (pva panels)

If I put a black screensaver on and turn off all the lights in my room the screen looks greyish, not black

i love my u2711 too, [i really dont know what this antiglare coating is] its superior to the u2410 i have next to it, its a lot blacker and more white

i wouldnt go 16x9 at 1920 but at 2560 its nice, especially for desktop area and films.. yepp its £1000 of monitor, but id rather sell my second 6950 than either of these monitors, when getting the u2711 but i love the u2410 too much,, that was a £300 loss lol

almost considered the hazro.. glad i didnt now, the samsung SA850 looks interesting as a u2410 relacement
