Went to plug in my monitor (samsung SM2433LW 24") into my macbook last night, so pulled out the dvi cable from my desktop and plugged it in without issue.

after plugging it back into my pc, my display no longer seems to work. i can see up to the win xp loading bar, but then my monitor just goes into stand by mode after this stage everytime. i know windows continues to load as i can hear the startup sound and navigate and play through itunes on my keyboard. and i know my monitor works as it was plugged into my mac.

any ideas?

yep.

it boots in safe and vga mode, but when i try to increase the display in vga to something more high res is when it becomes disinterested and just goes into standby mode

The obvious answer was you've tried both ports, AFAIK the windows boot screen appears on all monitors, so that's not enough to know which is the correct one.

Couldn't reinstall the graphics driver.

When I go into the control panel to access the nvidia control panel I get the message "NVIDIA display settings are not available. You are not currently using a display attached to a NVIDIA GPU."

Bearing in mind this is in VGA mode - should it work?
