Monitor display does not fill the screen

I have recently changed my motherboard and reinstalled the operating system (Windows XP). All seemed well. However, during my loading of Microsoft Office, the screen turned itself off (I don't think I touched anything). When I turned it on again, I found that the displayed:confused: image had become much smaller than the monitor's screen area. I now have a 1.5 inch black margin on both sides of the display.
Referring to the Catalyst Control Centre, I have tried to correct things by adjusting the desktop area, but there is no response and the setting remains stuck on 1440x900 (which incidentally is the recommended setting for the screen)
The screen has worked perfectly for 4 years, so what has gone wrong now? Help please.

cmndr andi ... Thank you. I tried the link, but unfortunately my catalyst control centre looks completely different and does not give me the options that are shown in the video. Perhaps it is because I have an earlier ATI version or because I am XP rather than Windows 7. Anyway, thanks for trying. ... D.

In that case I strongly suggest you go to this site and download the latest version of the "ATI Radeon Video Drivers", they work fine with Windows XP.

I suggest you pick the "Full Catalyst Software Suite" and the Windows XP (presumably 32bit) version.

benjo ... I thought that I had been through every combo on the monitor settings, but tried again at your suggestion. Result:success. Goodness knows what gremlin caused the problem and I remain nervous, but thank you very much for your help. ... d.
