Monitor Drivers - install or don't install?

I've always made the effort to install the correct drivers for my monitors, but a work colleague insisted the other day that I was wasting my time and there was no need to bother as he had never done so.

I reckon having the correct drivers is still important even if all they do is to tell the system the maximum resolution and refresh rate that the monitor is capable of.

So, who's right?

Thanks for replies :)

I install the correct drivers, as for some reason I find that any direct 3d based game won't run and my monitor displays a signal out of range message.

what reason does your friend give which might benefit you from not installing them? They can help your PC identify what the max res and refresh rate is and if nothing else, the monitor is listed by name in device manager :) no real reason not to.

He says he can see no difference when they are installed. I reckon the real reason he doesn't use than is that he's lazy and just can't be bothered

i dont think it would improve performance really, so in that sense there is little point, but they certainly dont hurt :)
