Hi all.

I've been looking around, getting ideas for a system I want to build in a few months, (hopefully). I'm really confused on the monitor.
There are so many different types, 4k, 1080p, 1440, 120hz, 144hz.

What is best for gaming?
Im thinking about getting a gtx970 when i build the system, if that helps.

Cheers, Jason

It's down to preference to be honest.

The ROG Swift is a great unit but at £600, its over your budget. There aren't many 1440p 144hz panels around to be honest so you'd have to consider what your preference is.

Colour Accuracy or refresh rate?

Saying that the PLS/IPS panels are pretty good for gaming but not quite as quick as the 120/144hz units.

I'm not really sure what id like tbh.
It's been quite a few years since I played games, and when I did, I used a CRT monitor. But I want to get back into gaming now and don't really know what sort of monitor to go for.

You should give serious consideration to the 21:9 ultra wides that are out there. I have the LG 34UM65 which is mainly used for gaming and movie viewing and it just takes my experience to a new level.

I'm not telling you that you should get one, you may not like the aspect ratio (to each his own and all that) but just thought I'd give you my 2 cents worth.

The UM65 is within your £500 budget too.

having tried various 1080p / 1440p / 4K / IPS / TN monitors I've come to the following conclusion:

gsync wins

for a single 970, stick with 1080p, but get one of the 144hz gsync ones, you will thank me later

Thanks for all your input guys :)

Would I be wasting money on buying a gtx 970 and only running at 1080p?
I suppose I could upgrade in the future though.

For me I'd rather run 1080p at a solid and consistent frame rate at ultra settings than have to tone down for 1440p and suffer periodic drop outs.

You'll have to forgive me but since it's been a while since I bought my current card I've been out of the graphics card business for a while so i'm not sure where the 970 stands right now.

All I know is I have a GTX 770 and it runs 1080 without hiccup. It does drive my 1440p monitor too but Crysis 3 saw it just start to push the limits of FPS, had to dial back the settings slightly on it.

I would look at monitor's and gpu's just before you decide to buy,if it is going to be a few months as you might get a good price at Christmas or the new year.
