Monitor for my Son

Hi,

My son has asked for a new monitor for Xmas. He has a PS5 and currently has a rubbish cheap TV so anything will be an improvement.

Budget is around £200-250. And I think something that can do 1440 and 120hz will be good. Also looking at around 27 or 32”

At this price point would it be best to get a VA or IPS screen?

Is there anything to keep away from? Or is there something I should look out for?

Thanks

For a PS5 I think 4K and decent HDR support would be more important than whether its a VA or IPS panel. Even the Switch 2 supports 4K nowadays.
I'd not rule out going for a TV either unless they are gaming at a desk.

This one has HDR 400 and dual mode for 4K 160 and high refresh rate 1080p 320 at £228

This one in the clearance section is only slightly over your budget at £262 and has HDR 600.

There's no such thing as good HDR on PC monitors shy of them being OLED or very rare FALD models, and the FALD models come with problems of their own.

HDR400 is a borderline gimmick, it legitimately makes things look worse more often than not. It can receive HDR but it doesn't make it look good whatsoever.

The PS5 also uses a dodgy upscaler for 4K, and I'd argue that 4K at 27" isn't particular great either as you need a larger screen to genuinely appreciate the pixel density in games. A high refresh, low latency 1440P monitor for a kid that's probably playing the likes of Fortnite etc will offer a vastly superior overall experience. Spending double on a 4K B-Grade screen with a much smaller warranty is not a good option in my mind.

Not sure what your point is about HDR other than moaning about HDR in general. At the end of the day the PS5 supports it so its something to consider. Sure it takes a bit of effort to get it set up right on PC but its much easier to setup on PS5. Obviously some montitors do it better than others, thats just the way it goes.

From my experience with PC gaming at 4K accross 27", 32", 55" and 57" screens and PS5 gaming on 27", 32", 55" screens I'd say the PS5 upscaler is fine and would only look better with a very high pixel density on a 27" 4K screen. Sure its not as good as native but no upscaling is. At the end of the day if the kid has been using a rubbish TV anyway they are not going to be bothered about the quality of the upscaling because it will be a huge improvement. Assuming they are using a 1080 screen currently the upgrade to 1440 would be mediocre compared to 4K in my opinion.

In terms of refresh rate the PS5 can only do 120 regardless of resolution. In terms of latency my first recommendation actually has a better response time than your recommendation at 0.5 @4K and /0.3ms @1080. Your claim your "A high refresh, low latency 1440P monitor will offer a vastly superior overall experience" is nonsense. The only significant difference would be the lower and inferior resolution.

Also my first recommendation is not B grade, I think you may have missed it, I just included the B grade because it was around the budget and better HDR.

Dont want to get into a tit for tat argument about this anyway so probably won't respond further. You are entitled to your opinions and me mine but I think your recommendations are a bit misguided considering the actual use case here.

His HDR point is right though.

Unless you're buying an OLED monitor or one of the Mini-LED monitors (Q27G3XMN is often well reviewed for having good HDR in a non-OLED monitor) then HDR on a standard IPS monitor with either 0 dimming zones or just 8 is a waste of time and you're better off just not using it at all. All the HDR modes do on those types of monitors is just crank the brightness to max and blow every bit of detail out the water.

I agree with the monitor you've recommend though, that 27GP95RP-B would be a really nice pairing with the PS5.

Alternatively, if 1440p is preferred because of keeping the price a bit lower I really like the Asus XG27ACS when it's available for 189-199. I don't think it's worth it at the full 229-249 price - but it's a 1440p 180hz monitor that supports VRR on PS5 despite only being HDMI 2.0. It has 'decent' contrast for an IPS monitor and it has variable overdrive, something I've found is really useful on monitors for consoles where games may run at a locked 60fps - or they might run up to 120fps and variable overdrive helps a lot with that experience.

I recently purchased the 27" version of this monitor which i also use with my ps5 and i find it really good. Its not 1440p i know, but a nice choice still for the console.

AOC are good monitors and for your budget plus requirements then this one should be a good option.

I've owned 2 of these LG monitors since last September. Bought two of them, as they were on a very good offer at the time. They've been golden ever since.

It's within your budget, but @Gray2233's suggestion of the AOC monitor is better priced. Could even get 2 of the AOC's for £238 if you really wanted, which would still be within your budget.
