Monitor for up to £1k - is x34 the ultimate one??

Hey,
So I recently builded a new PC (still waiting for GTX 1070) and would like to replace my 32" TV that I've been using for the past 2-3 years - only recently I've compared it with my friends monitor and realized the difference between good monitor and not so good TV :P

I have budget of around £1000 and I would like to buy 1 monitor (not fan of 2/3 as I use my tablet / laptop for things I want to see all the time)

I've heard that Acer x34 is pretty much the one to "go for" at this moment, is this true??

any other recommendations??

From most of us that own them yes it is, OCUK last week said they've sold over 1000 Acer and around 50 Asus.

I would concur, the X34 is superb and I love mine. It's expensive, but it really is the best you can get right now. There are some new ultrawides on the horizon which look interesting, but will be end of the year before we see those hit the market, if we're lucky, as nothing has officially been announced yet.

I'm going to come at it from a different angle, I paid £500 for mine, and although I love it I wouldn't of been happy to pay full price, I think these screens are too expensive full rrp and they are far from perfect, in an ideal world I would value these screens at around £599, which oddly enough is how much the FREESYNC version is.

That being said though it is a really nice screen.

If you're a gamer, wait. The next step up is 4K, but to get the most out of it you'll want DP1.3, 32" or bigger and a 1080Ti or higher to power it all.

IMO the monitor market is a bit 'meh' at the moment.

Is it really though? As we know, the 1080 isn't a 4K card. The 1080Ti will be better, but not massively so, and by the time it comes along there will be 120Hz+ 4K monitors available. But the 1080Ti won't be THAT good... it won't be pushing 120FPS at 4K, no way! So then the advice will be to keep waiting until a GPU comes along that can achieve that. But by the time that arrives, we will start hearing news about OLED and 8K screens lol! It never ends!! ;)

Besides, 4K won't offer the immersion of 21:9 unless it's at a size of 40"+, and it will ALWAYS come second in the fluidity stakes because it will always be harder to drive.

:)

1080Ti (should) crush 4K@60, good enough for anyone. Anything higher and to me is massively pointless.

I'm waiting till Volta to upgrade my 980Ti, then a 4K monitor at 32" or above to replace my 1440p monitor, which tbh is perfect for me at the moment.

Posted this in another thread

For the Asus PG348Q

+ Better stand
+ Better build quality
+ Screen can rotate (although the new X34A fixes this)
+ Better colour reproduction
+ Better brightness and contrast
+ Never heard of one not reaching 100Mhz
+ No issues at max OC
+ No reported coil whine that I have read about

- More expensive
- Some see the rog logo as a bit of a waste
- Very slightly slower than the X34 in response times
- Little more power hungry than the X34

For the Acer X34

+ Very slightly fiaster (about 0.5ms response)
+ cheaper (just)

- They reach 100Mhz overclock, but some introduce flicker at this speed
- Reported coil whine on some models
- seems to be more bleed reported on the x34 but I cant confirm

You're saying more than 60FPS is pointless? Prepare for a flaming for that one lol! Even 4K die-hards want 120Hz+ 4K monitors, 60FPS just doesn't cut it, especially when you factor in the inevitable frame drops which absolutely necessitate G-Sync. 1080Ti will be a decent 4K performer, but it won't be the answer to everyone's prayers. People don't seem to learn... no GPU ever will be, not for more than a few months anyway, before the goal posts move yet again and that certain type of gamer wants the next best thing. 4K is so far out beyond the bleeding edge that chasing it will just cause pain and financial stress for most people, and although I've no doubt we will one day reach the point where it's as easy to drive as 1080p is now, by that point very few people will care! Just think, 10 years ago what would people have paid for a 960 that ran 1080p at 60FPS... you couldn't put a price on that. Nowadays, meh, that's as basic as it gets.

I actually ordered an acer x34a today as im sick and tired of some of my games lagging on 4k, want me to take pics or it?

Good choice. Hopefully you get a good unit.

I've not experienced any issues with mine but I know others have.

Fully agree. 60fps is totally fine for me. Seems buttery smooth to me. Played on 120hz. Could maybe tell the difference but totally not worth chasing those extra frames in my opinion. 4k at 60 fps is where the immediate future of gaming lies and I'm saving up for it as we speak.
