Hi,

I am going to be getting a 22" monitor soon and would like to know should I go for a Glossy finish or not for the monitor ?

I be using it for General usage and gaming.

Thanks,
Garry

It's a personal preference thing.

Some think that the glossy finish adds sharpness to the screen, but others dislike the increased reflection of any lights behind. For me it doesn't make a lot of difference, as the eye adjusts to either. My last two monitors have been matt, but the one I use at work is glossy.

I'd say if you're in a light room, go matt. I don't think glossy looks any better, so all you'd have is increased glare.

yup just personal preference.

Glossy makes the monitor overall look a bit nicer IMO, but as far as actually using the monitor I much prefer matte.

even in my office, which is fairly dark, I got very distracted constantly catching my reflection/reflection of the room in it.

Good if you are paranoid though, you can catch people sneaking up on you!

people say glossy screens give better constracts (deeper blacks etc) but I'm not too convinenced. The reflections can be quite annoying, you get used to it but its still there lol.

Anyhow, you cant really go wrong with a matt screen.

If you game in a perfect home theatre environment, with all the lights out and no outside light coming in, then glossy is great. In normal lighting conditions (even moonlight through the curtains), you will see reflections, mostly when it is displaying black.
My HDTV is pretty much a matte finish, so it looks the same in all conditions, but my laptop with the X-Glass screen looks best at night.

I'm intrigued by this discussion, one thing I have to ask though... is a glossy screen really any different to the glass tube on a CRT, especially a flat tube CRT?

But aren't you still looking at the top surface of polished glass?

Is it the fact that when a TFT is off it is black, rather than the grey of a CRT that makes them look glossier?

I'm just trying to get my head around how they can make the surface of the glass more reflective, as that is where the reflection comes from. Is the glass on a glossy screen different to normal glass?

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, I'm just trying to relate to the glossiness in some way, I am considering the NEC 20WGX2 Pro, which has this type of screen.

The surface is plastic, rather than glass.

That said, I personally don't find the glossy screens to be any more reflective than a CRT. Remember though that the degree of reflection you see is not only a property of the surface material, but also of the screen brightness and distance from the glossy surface to the actual panel.

i have a xerox xa7 19i (glossy) at home, and two non glossy screens at work

i really don't mind using either tbh..

Happy with either here too.

Glossy does look a touch sharper but it's tendency to reflect light sources behind you can be a tad annoying.

Colours and contrast seem better on glossy screens from what i have seen. However, i can't stand the reflections and would never buy a glossy one for my own use. Many people prefer glossy though; whatever floats your boat.

i have a hp w2007v glossy monitor, best monitor ive used, all other mat monitors, color looks washed out ,compared to this,

In my experience a glossy screen really does add a bit more depth to the image over a matt one. The only downside is the reflectiveness but to be honest I never found that a problem at all.
