I'd be grateful for any instances you can think of that will cause my monitor to go into standby mode and say it's receiving no signal from the PC. There's no other option but to turn off the PC and reset to get it to come back on.

1. Windows isn't even installed yet so it's nothing to do with that.
2. It does it even when in the BIOS or when trying to install windows (thus making it impossible to install windows)
3. It does it within 5-10 minutes everytime.
4. There's no power saving options to turn on/off in the BIOS.

500w High quality Antec PSU (80%+ efficiency)
4850 graphics card
ASUS P5k D mobo

The motherboard has dual PCI-E slots, I've tried putting the card in both but same thing happens.

Assuming all your connectors are not loose, I'd say its as you seem to of guessed, your PSU is prob not strong enough (I figure you guessed that as you specced it) particuarly if its an older PSU, they lose efficiency over time. I tried to upgrade my old system by buying a new gfx card (4870) and that had a 600W PSU in it, but it wasnt strong enough, gave me a good excuse for a whole new system ;)

make sure its seated exactly right in pci slot. This sounds idiotic but if you have a slightly out case or slot bit worn it can do it.

had it myself other day when changing my case.took twenty attempts to get working and if youd of looked at it you would have sworn it was perfect everytime.

exact same symptoms booted up fans spinning and stuff but annoying message on monitor.
