I just purchased a few games on the brilliant offers on steam, the first one I downloaded was stalker - when I try to launch this game the monitor goes into standby and system does not respond, the same for a previously purchased and installed saints row2. I am using Win7-32 ultimate and my psu is a galaxy enermax 1kw, also im on 9.11 drivers for the 5850, any help is appreciated

well, I wasnt getting a response, and assumed I should post it where the issue may be applicable - dont worry im not posting it anywhere else :D

Sounds like a driver not responding - I was getting it with a faulty GPU (not saying yours is) where it started off with drivers becomming unresponsive.. sometimes they would fix and it got gradually worse till it started BSOD.

I could only suggest trying older drivers and see if it helps.

most likely, the game is running in a resolution or refresh rate your monitor can't handle. make sure you haven't set anything up incorrectly, and try editing the options files or using launch commands to change the resolutions.

Make sure you have another program open, then just try launching one of the games that sends you screen into black mode. When it goes black and monitor goes into standby, try alt-tabbing to the program you originally opened. If it's alt-tabs fine then I'd say the res/refresh is to blame. You could also, if alt-tab doesn't work, mash Alt+F4 a few times when it goes black and see if you go back to desktop which would indiciate the same reason I'd say. If not, then it's probably something else as you should be able to alt-tab or Alt+F4 out.

Yep, I'm sure I had to change something on stalker before it worked. Can't remember what though.
