I have an issue in Linux Mint with my monitor switching off during use, giving the message ‘monitor going to sleep’ generally when I am playing games only and not in normal system use. The PC is still running, at least for a minute or two as I can hear sound, but I cannot get the screen to show a signal again, and I have to hard reboot the machine.
I have tried the Linux mint forums as a good place to start but I have not been able to sort it out yet, I have also tried the Nvidia reddit but the mods closed my post, which was helpful!!
Anyway, I switched to Linux Mint from Windows 10 a couple of moths ago, I run a dual boot system now with Mint and Windows 10. My hardware
Intel Core i7-9700k
Samsung 970 Pro 1TB NVMe
Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra Intel Z390 DD4
Gigabyte Aorus RGB 2x8BG DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz
HP2475w monitor
I have experienced this playing Football Manager and Prey, both on Steam, rather than in normal usage. Its odd as the keyboard and mouse remain in use prior to the screen switching off. No keyboard clicks, turning the monitor off and on, mouse movement or even cable removal and plugging in will bring the picture back, I have to hard reboot. I can hear music in some instances, so the computer is still on. Ctrl-Alt-backspace has restarted the driver on a few isolated cases, but not recently.
I have tried different cables (DVI, HDMI, Displayport), I have set the screen to 'never' ‘Turn off the screen when inactive’, I have also set ‘Suspect when inactive for’ to ‘Never’ in Power Management. I have no screen saver set either. I have gone into the menu on the monitor itself where I have ‘powersaver' is set to 'off', 'power on recall' is set to 'on' and 'sleep timer' is set to 'off
I have tried all three variations of NVidia driver available on Linux Mint and I am currently on the latest 460.56-0, and the same behaviour is observed in each. I have tried the open source driver but I can't play games using it.
I have the latest kernel, 5.8.0-50, and everything else is up to date. I have even flashed the bios to the latest version.
Can anyone else think of anything else to try?
I don’t think its a heat issue, or volts etc, so I am a bit stuck now.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
