Monitor heat output

Since getting AC I've noticed that even on a cool evening and when not gaming the room will eventually heat up and prompt me to turn the AC on.

I think the monitor is the culprit (1440p 144hz IPS). It's warm to the touch, but I don't think it's broken - it just produces some heat and there's nowhere for the heat to go.

This prompted me to google whether OLED is cooler than IPS, seems not - it's actually surprising how few relevant search results I'm getting.

Has there been any work on producing a monitor tech that runs cooler? Seems like quite a lot of wasted energy so surely there should be something?

I wouldn't expect a 1440p, 144 Hz IPS monitor to produce enough heat you would notice. A high-end graphics card at idle consumes more power than the screens do.

Somewhere between 10-30 watts, depending on refresh and brightness level.

Don't believe OLED to be much better overall, except when the images displayed are black.

Energy used generates heat, the more energy your product uses the more heat it'll push out. You can dissipate that heat for the good of your electronics, but it still has to go somewhere. A lot of higher end monitors actually have fans built into them to help with what you're describing, we've grown very used to flat panels being low energy despite the fact that in order to improve the visual quality on them they need more power.

OLED can run cooler funnily enough, but it's not necessarily going to do so when pushing for visual quality as the screens are using energy to push things like peak brightness to support good HDR etc.

That said, unless you're extremely heat-sensitive and sitting nearfield to a massive screen in a small room you really shouldn't be noticing temperature problems from the screen alone.

The heat is coming from the collective hardware and energy sources in your room, it's just more noticeable with a screen as you can hover your hand in front of it and feel the output.

You're thinking about it wrong if you're looking for evidence of the type of screen being "cooler".

The wattage is the heat it's producing. Doesn't matter if its using the latest pixel tech or projecting with a halogen bulb hotter than the sun. If the device is using 100 watts its putting out about 100 watts of heat.
