OK, so this keeps happening and it's annoying the **** out of me. I play LFS for about 15 minutes and then *WHAM*, the monitor just shuts off and goes into standby but the game is still playing as I can hear the sound still working.
It only affects the primary monitor too, throughout all of this the secondary stays on (primary is DVI, secondary VGA).
I have an ATi X800 GTO, do you think this is an overheating problem. I'm not so sure if it is, I mean it started happening the other day when it was pretty hot but it isn't very hot at all now. Anyway the game still seems to be playing even though I just can't see it. If it was an overheat then the game would crash or shut off right? OS is Vista btw, maybe I need to update the driver or something.
Maybe the card is just failing?

sounds like a overprotection circet i.e safty thing.. your monitor is cutting out due too heat..

have you cheaked the vents on monitor for blocked vent holes. dust?

Not necessarily overheating though, could be an overzealous, out of tolerance, or incorrectly installed heat sensor (probably a thermistor).

I had a Packard Bell CRT with a penchant for doing this, and worse, the sod had some kind of enforce cool-down time.
Put a brick through it and bought an LCD when this became too frequent to tolerate.

Had this exect problem with a 20" Viewsonic lcd, got through 3 monitors before they gave me one that worked ok.

Try swapping them over first, then rma time.
