Got given an old beige monitor. Good woking order but very sad looking.

Thought i'd see if I could bring it up to date a little.

Here's the sorry little chap

Stand removed and screen masked (many thanks to Mrs Dubs for donating an old "Homes and Gardens" Magazine, and no, I couldn't possibly use one of my PC magazines instead.

Keyed up and ready for primer/undercoat.

little bit more progress on this tonight, in between laying down the copper on the Modzart project and sorting the name for the server build. BTW many thanks to those who have contributed their ideas to that thread, very much appreciated. For those of you who haven't and might like to help suggest a name for my next project, head over here

So I got the primer on the monitor tonight. A lovely still night so I could spray outside

The halfords rattle can was not behaving itself however. Dodgy nozzle I think led to lots of clumping and drips from the nozzle which is very rare and thankfully I managed to keep off the job.

All finished off with a stunning sunset and a glass of Wine with Mrs Dubs

What? you weren't thinking I was going to post a picture of Mrs Dubs were you??? More than my lifes worth that...

Weather's been nice again this weekend so along with the work on Modzart i've managed to get the first few top coats onto the monitor.

I'm using a Plastikote "Metallic Black" paint. It was one I was originally thinking of using for the Modzart case but went for Matte black instead, so just using up the can.

I have to say I'm actually quite taken with the colour after all.

May I ask what you do with the finished product/s/?

This is really just and experiment TBH. I've not got any real plans for it, but might use it as a monitor for a server or something. Most likely it will just sit on the side and do nothing.

Looks so much better. Nice

I wonder what the new black will be in 5-10 years? I'm very into my HiFi also and remember that at one point it was all black. Then it went through a massive silver phase. only each manufacturer had a slightly diferrent type of silver. Then....in the words of AC-DC it all went "back to black"

They say the new black is white, with cars anyway.

That's lucky cos Black it is :)

Flipped over to top coat the front of the bezel

On goes the top coat.

The photos don't really do the metallic Black justice, It's really quite nice. Essentially high gloss black with metallic monocromatic particles (as in not multi rainbow flipping coloured)

Still a few more coats to go but you get the idea.

Since you have sprayed it, it looks like it has grown a few inches from the original photo, it now looks like a widescreen.

One of the Bonuses I guess. I must tell Plastikote :)

Halfords spray cans generally arent bad to be honest. but you do get the occasional one thats horrendous =[ Anyway, good job on your monitor, i might do it to one of my older ones before i start using it for benching purposes.

I've actually been plagued by problems recently and have eventually worked out what the problem is. I'm wearing latex gloves and the tip of my finger with the slightly baggy end is causing the paint to collect there and then come off in lttle globules giving me spits of paint onto the job. Finally cracked it today when it happended during the top coat of the Modzart front panel, which now needs to be sanded and re coated as a result.

Looks good

Cheers matey.

Its scary to think of things that you would consume time with if you quit modding G-Dubs.... Thanks for giving that old monitor a new life!

All that and a full time job, a 40 minute comute, being secretary for a mens club and restoring an old cottage.

and yeah, Mrs Dubs would be quite pleased as i'd get a little bit more done around the house. That said, when I haven't got a project on the go I tend to get under her feet and eventually she suggests I head out to the Garage and start chopping stuff up.

My secret.....No Kids.

No Kids = disposable income and time. Not only that, when i'm old I get to choose my own OAP home.

looks good in black. Why not make the front part white or something?

Nice idea, but going with all black. mainly cos I got the cans and need to use them up,

Well all done.

Gotta be the shortest Mod I've ever done. Most of my Mods are measured in ice ages!!!

Masking tape came off real nice, and the screen was fine aside from the fingerprints that were there before.

So here you go guys.

Love to know what you think. Worthwhile???
