Monitor mounted on desks

Hi,

Having a quick nosey on the 'desk and room' gallery in the Cases thread, I've seen lots of people mount various types of monitors on desks, bookshelves etc.

If anyone here has a setup like this, I was wondering if you could tell me how they sound? What particular speakers would you recommend for this purpose?

Also, whether it would be worthwhile going for a set of monitors for recording and production, as opposed to my current set up of Hi-fi speakers which sound quite nice atm. (Tannoy Custom F1s on Atacama stands ).

Due to the lack of space, I have active monitors instead of the usual amp and bookshelf speakers. If I could stand mount them, I would, I have them isolated on squash balls and slabs of black limestone.

Budget?

Budget of around £200. Looking for the best value more than anything else, so would prefer to spend less if it only means a bit of compromise. They would be in addition to my sound system so cannot be stand mounted.

Would you recommend monitors absolutely when compared to a good hifi setup at all?
