Help me i,m tearing my hair out here

I brought my computer to my gf's house as she has fast internet ( 50mb line :D) and i wanted to update my os/ anti virus (done fresh install at my home) and i plugged her monitor into my computer and it comes up as out of range once windows 7 has finished loading.
Now i know this is due to my computer trying to apply the res rate of my crt to the lcd so i booted in vga low res mode its an option in the f8 screen when booting and it still comes up as out of range.

usual method to fix this is

Boot in safe mode and uninstall the ati cat's drivers and cleaned the reg and reboot.

So the computer starts as normal and loads in vgasave mode in windows and i can then install the gpu drivers again and reboot only to get the same problem all over again.

so i repeat step 1 and allow windows to install the window's 7 default drivers for my gpu and i reboot and i still get the out of range screen once windows finishes loading.

when in safe mode i notice that the monitor driver loaded is a non generic plug and play driver and it will not allow me to uninstall it and the tab to look at its properties is non clickable. I once again uninstall the gpu drivers and clean the reg and i can get into windows again in vgasave mode and the monitor option is still greyed out.

Now the best part i plugged in my other hard drive with win 7 installed (wrecked from tweaking os to get it more streamlined to my p.c) and it works fine. monitor is picked up and away i go hence how i,m posting this.

Ive searched online and cannot fine this problem anywere

Anyone any ideas ???????

That sounds very frustrating. You may be better off time-wise reinstalling Windows 7 than trying lots of other solutions that may or may not work. You have tried the things I would suggest already.

sadly this is a fresh install of windows, left the install disk at home :(

I would go home and get it but awaiting a delivery so i,m stuck here (kinda why i,m updating the p.c at her home + her connection rocks)

what is really annoying it that is prob something silly that i,ve overlooked !!!!

Has she got a flat screen TV? I'd plug the PC into that and see if it does the same thing. If not, set the res in there and *hopefully* it'll be ok when the monitor is plugged back in.

no all she has was this 17" lcd

I managed to get home and nab my install cd and went for a clean install and quess what its still happening.

i think the dvi ports are working in vga mode hence the high refresh rate

looking into editing the reg file for the monitor so i can make my own custom generic monitor file

found loads of posts about this online issue with ati cards and cheap lcd screens that have no eide info
