I've got a Viewsonic VP171s LCD monitor and it has been great for the last 4 years.

Earlier the screen started flickering a bit and then went black, although the green power light was on.

Turned it off, turned it back on and I get a flickering display and a weird squealing noise and then it goes black again.

Any idea's what is up?

Is it new monitor time?

Cheers.

I left it turned off for a bit and then turned it on and it has been working fine.

I'm expecting it to pack up again, cheers for the suggestion!

Could be as simple as the HV supply for the backlight failing. Probably a 50p capacitor or something. A failing transformer will give a whining noise, I can think of nothing else in a LCD that would.

If you are not afraid of taking stuff apart, have a look for the backlight supply module. Be carefull as it does ramp up the voltage to somthing that will give a kick, so unplug and leave for 30mins to ensure all the caps have released their charges.

Visually inspect the backlight circut and look for any leaking caps or hot marks. I would take a punt on getting a spare one and trying it before I invested in a whole new montor.

The panel is still worth money, so eBay it if you get a new one, someone will take the time and fix it for peanuts.

Exactly the same happened with my Q17 a few months ago, swapped the cathode inverter out for one with my other Q17 and it worked a treat, for a few weeks then popped that one too. Some spares from hyundai later and I was back to dualscreening, unfortunately a power surge at a mates house knocked out the inverter again so I just replaced it with another off auction. Panel etc still works but it seems to be eating through inverters so I'm not sure if it's something else killing them.

If all else fails you can always buy a blue cathode set from Overclockers and ghetto your screen back to life....
