monitor problem

Hi guys,

I have a bit of a problem with my rig. I'm using an Acer 22" LCD monitor and an ATI Powercolor 4780 graphics card both of which are no longer stocked by OCUK.

My problem is that after so long my computer monitor just turns itself off and says "no signal detected" or words to that effect but my system remains running with all fans etc... still running. When i reset the machine the monitor still does not function and i have to power down the system for 5 mins or so every time to get it to boot normally.

This happens regardless of what i am doing. I can be checking emails or watching dvd's etc... the graphics card is only about 6 months old and i've not had a problem with it before. I know it's not the OS fault as it is happening on every OS that i have tried (even windows 7) and i cannot try another monitor/psu because i don't have one but according to some sources on the internet this is a trait of a dying graphics card. I have tried running the system without the side pannel (antec 902 case) and the same thing happens however the GPU doesnt get that hot and the fan is working right with no obstructions.

Can anyone please confirm this or help me solve the issue as it is becoming very annoying.

It does sound very much like a problem with the card. Any chance of you borrowing a card from a friend, even a lower spec one to try out? Some shops will loan you a used but working card if you leave a deposit and agree to buy new one from them if it proves to be a card fault.

My local shop does this, in fact because I've known them for a long time I don't even need to leave a deposit these days. It won't be a top card by any means but one that should allow you to test your system.

Good luck with sorting the problem. :(

Hi Djohn.

i'm just sort of scratching my head a bit at the minute cos the problem is that i don't have access to another card although i am considering buying one of the 5700's at the end of the month, for their power and their cost i don't think you can go far wrong.

Whats confusing me is that i had it running last night, watching 24 season 6 for several hours and i did not have one problem. Thats what is making me wonder if it is a bad connection in the power supply for the monitor but then, when it happens the monitor does'nt turn itself off it just goes into a kind of stand by mode. I don't think its the psu either since im running a 700watt OCZ Stealth Extreme psu which is less than 6 months old. Those are the 3 main components that i can see are causing a problem although i have heard that it may be a bad pci connector on the mobo.

As you can understand, the last thing i want to do is spend £XXX's on new upgrades and for the problems to continue, oh well. I cant do anything now until the end of the month anyway so i guess that the 1st thing to do is open the case up and make sure all of the connections are ok and then start by buying a new graphics card if the problems persist.
