I confess I know very little about monitors so forgive my lack of knowledge as gaming is new to me. My current monitor is an HP w2007v with a native resolution of 1680 x 1050, which has only a VGA connection.
Yes it's old but it's absolutely fine for general purpose usage such as surfing, video viewing and viewing and editing images etc, in fact I'd see no need to replace it but I'm now upgrading my mobo/CPU etc and contemplating entry level gaming so suspect I'll need a better monitor though I hadn't initially budgeted for it. That was the final purchase on my list when I had everything else.

The GPU I've chosen to purchase is a GTX 1060 3Gb which will meet my needs though obviously doesn't have a VGA output but will I via an adapter, be able to still use the GPU output with the old monitor until I replace it with a new one or is it a case of it being instantly redundant and unconnectable?
If it's connectable, which adapter should I choose?

It would seem that 1080P is what I need and should be aiming for with a new monitor so any suggestions on a reasonably priced, decent quality monitor that should do all I need it to do would be welcome but it's worth noting due to positioning and location of the monitor, I'm restricted to roughly a 20"-27" max screen size

get a 24inch monitor, are you wanting a TN panel for best response times or an IPS which is a better quality picture?

This is just it, I don't really know sufficient about monitors to work out which is best for my needs...that's why it was the final item on my list.

Ideally I'd like a fast response monitor, preferably combining good image quality without breaking the bank though I'd rather spend a little extra than buy cheap and be unhappy with it. Whether this is possible without paying an arm and a leg .
24 inch sounds about perfect in size for my needs but any advice on which type of monitor to choose would be welcomed.

What type you go for depends on what you will (mainly) be using your computer for.

If it's mostly for browsing, work, image editing and most forms of gaming - go for image quality over speed (IPS)

If you're into intense, competative, high-speed gaming, then go for TN.

Well that's cleared things up a little bit more...the computer will be used for both general purpose ( browsing, image editing etc) and a foray into the world of entry level gaming.
My preferred GPU is a Zotac GTX 1060 6Gb mini ( was going for the 3 Gb version but it may be a bit too long for my case and obviously 6Gb is better and one would think it would handle more up to date game releases in lower settings ).
That should get me started in entry level gaming, particularly when I install the new mobo, Ryzen 2600 or similar and DDR4 though I hardly think I'd ever get deeply involved with gaming, so I guess image quality would be preferable in the longer term.

As I've said, if anyone would care from their experience to suggest reasonably priced specific monitors around 24" which would meet my needs, so much the better as it will narrow down my search and I'd rather get something that is recommended than do the guesswork myself.

you definitely need a new monitor.... pascal gpus won't work with a dvi to vga adapter...
for that 1060 6gb you will be ok with a 24" 1920x1080 monitor... buy IPS and you will get nice image quality as well
