Monitor Recommendations?

I'm after a new monitor primarily for office work/development/text with occasional graphics work thrown in. I'm thinking 22" purely for the smaller dot pitch/sharper text. I like the look of some of the larger 24" monitors but I'm concerned that the text isn't going to be crisp enough.

Budget is ideally around the £150 mark but I'd consider paying more if the monitor was highly regarded.

I've got a 24" GW2450HM at the moment and think it's great for movies and games but the text quality on the desktop is definitely lacking, which I find extremely distracting.

Any recommendations?

I can tell you why (and I hope others, who have fewer replies than they wanted to, will also take notice):

Here in OCUK forums, we have people with varying experience. Here in the monitor section, most people have experience on the different combinations of 24"-27", £300+, 120Hz, 2560x1440, as that's indeed where the good stuff is, and what we're interested in.

We have now seen few threads with £150 budgets (quite common in the Christmas season, I'd reckon), asking for recommendations. And that's all fine and dandy, we understand that not everybody is willing to spend half of their system upgrade budget on a single component. But unfortunately, we don't have that much experience on the bottom-of-the-barrel monitors, other than that they are indeed bottom-of-the-barrel. We can give semi-educated guesses, but that's all they are, guesses.

For the low-budget inquiries, I tend to recommend to increase the budget and go for the BenQ GW2760HS (actually, it's even on sale atm, for £200) or its little brother, BenQ GW2760 for £162.
They are both 27", PWM-free, 1920x1080 VA panels.

But considering that you're already worried of text sharpness at 24" with 1920x1080, it would be logical to assume that 27" 1920x1080 would be out of the question. Unfortunately, low-budget 24" monitors is where my semi-educated guesses turn into wild guesses, so I can't help you much more. All I can recommend is that don't buy a TN panel, if at all possible. Someone might recommend IPS over VA, as IPS is generally considered to have better color accuracy. But on the low budget models, this might not even apply. But both are still better than TN. In other words, don't choose a TN monitor.

Another thing for lack of replies is too little background info. This doesn't apply to you, as you have readily stated the usage scenario and your own thoughts on what sort of monitor you're looking for, but this is not always the case. I would advice others to take notice of this bit.

But another thing applying to you, which also explains the views without replies, is your ambiguous thread title ("Monitor Recommendations?). People will come and see if it's something they could help with. If it were "Monitor recommendations of 22"-24" for £150-£200", people wouldn't need to come check the inside of the thread to see what you're after. Actually, the mouse-over does give a brief description of the inside of the thread, but most people forget it's there, and simply click the link... Like I did. :D

Maybe they should rename this forum to 'High-end Monitors' :p

Educated guesses would have been fine but I'm not fussed, I ordered a monitor from advice given on other forums and I'm sure it'll be fine.

Next time I'll consider posing my question in GD - my sexual preferences will no doubt be put into question but at least I'd get a few responses :D

Have you tried a profile from ICC Profiles tft central - http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc_profiles.htm#b

A lot better than the stock profile.:)

Hi Oldphart, yes I'm currently using the profile you recommended and whilst I'm perfectly happy with movies and games, I just can't live with the blocky text - I very quickly get eye strain which often leads to a nightmare of a headache.

I'm still totally happy with the BenQ and will definitely continue to use it but I need something a bit sharper for text work, even just typing this I can feel my eyes going.

IMO up the budget and grab yourself one of these

ocuk dont sell them so cant give you a link but its well within your budget offers ips for sharper text and better colours and imo looks better than the aoc as its all black

Thanks a lot for the recommendation. The only thing with that monitor is the dot pitch at 0.265. Whilst that's less than the Benq monitor I have, it's not as low as I think I need to go to get the nice crisp text I'm after.

If only I could have a look at these monitors in a shop life would be so much easier.

reading through the requirements and feedback, have a look for any of our 23" IPS monitors.....if you have any doubt over AOC and who we are, 225,000 monitors in 2013 :-) took the No3 position in Q3 and also look into IPS and you will see limited manufactures and look into our parent company TPV...produce 1/3 of the worlds monitors (50mil per year)

I2369VM....Display Port, 2 x HDMI (MHL), VGA, Vesa, Speakers
I2367FH....2 x HDMI, VGA, Speakers
I2367FM....2 x HDMI (MHL), VGA, Speakers

you will be very happy with the results

The one I linked is a 24 (23.5) they do a 21.5 version too

which drops it down to .248 i doubt youl get much better than that for the money you wish to pay

Thanks a lot, I'll have a look at those :)

Ah good, I'll have a look at the 21.5" version too. Yeah .24 something would be about the best I can hope for. My old monitor was in the .24 range and that was good enough for text so that's what I'm basing it on.

Thanks for the recommendations :)

Edit: just had a look at that Acer one, stuie, and it does look impressive for the money, seems to get decent reviews. I like the nice thin bezel on it too, which would be better for a dual monitor setup if I decide to go that route.

I received delivery of one of those earlier today and think it is excellent. Such a relief on my eyes! I had reservations about the glossy screen but now that I see it in the flesh I quite like it. It's a very classy looking monitor, imo.

Putting a magnet in the stand of a computer monitor for 'paper clips' is probably not a great idea though - whoever's idea that was - I'll have to remember not to put anything vulnerable on that!

Thanks for the recommendation, I'm very pleased with it, no excuses to not do any work now! :)
