So, my monitor is at 1680x1050 and the picture is burning the eyes out of my head due to the refresh rate. Apparently my monitor (Asus vw222s) supports 75hz but when I access the display settings 60 is the only option I'm given for 1680x1050.

However, when I'm using Linux, the refresh rate is considerably less noticeable than on Windows. But it's still there. It could be the drivers, but so far I've tried various versions on Windows and Linux and the problem is still there and noticeable.

Any ideas?

It wont be the refresh rate that is doing your eyes in.
Compared to a CRT which would seem to flicker and lead to headaches at a low refresh rate, TFT`s refresh the screen in a different way and DO NOT flicker.
Its more than likey the high luminance of the screen that is hurting your eyes. Adjust the brightness and contrast to a more useable level.

Thanks for the link. It's pixel walk. And it's bloody atrocious on this monitor. So much so I don't think I'll be buying another Asus monitor again. No amount of tweaking has helped. :(
