Monitor refresh rate - who to believe?

Afternoon Overclockers,

Is Windows or Nvidia Control Panel going to report the most accurate refresh rate for a monitor?

I've been running a BenQ XL2411T 1080p 144 Hz monitor for many years now, and now that I'm running a Dell S2721DGFA 1440p 144-165 Hz monitor, Windows states the BenQ is 60 Hz, whilst Nvidia Control Panel states 144 Hz.

The Dell is connected via HDMI (so capped at 144 Hz until I get a DisplayPort cable) and the BenQ is still connected via the DVI-D cable from before.

Which is right? If the BenQ has indeed been lowered to 60 Hz, has it been lowered due to the competing high refresh rate of the new Dell?

Any pointers would be gratefully received!

Hugh

Is there an information section within the monitor OSD that confirms active resolution and refresh rate? Might provide a useful third view :)

An excellent shout - the BenQ's OSD shows 'Current 1920x1080@60' and 'Optimum 1920x1080@120' - so it would indeed appear that Windows is correct and Nvidia Control Panel incorrect. That is assuming the monitor itself knows what it's doing more than both Windows and Nvidia?

Now then...why has the BenQ dropped from 144 Hz before the new Dell, to 60 Hz with it?

And resolved. After a few restarts (unrelated, just tweaking other things), I had the option to change the refresh rate in the Nvidia Control Panel, reselected 144 Hz, and now both Windows and the BenQ OST show 144 Hz.

So basically, a slightly enhanced version of 'Turn it off and on again' sorted it.

Thank you again @Baddass as I had no idea at all the screens themselves might display such actually useful information.
