Its hard tho not impossible to find a good one and if you're looking for specific panel reviews it gets even harder.

Warning.... rant.

It seems that a lot of Youtube tech journalists just cannot separate their own personal bias from objectivity, for example one, someone who seems to be and certainly puts himself as neutral and perfectional vocally thinks that any monitor with a contrast ratio of less than 10,000:1 is not HDR at all and should be ignored, the only way you're going to get that level of contrast ratio is with an OLED, so anything that isn't OLED isn't worth considering, right ok so thanks for wasting my time.
That IMO is just pure snobbery. Not helpful.

Another just hates VA panels, he explains why he thinks VA panels should be ignored and i get his reasons for not liking them as i have one but because he just hates them goes on to ignore the benefits they have vs an IPS.

So as i'm browsing, not necessarily in a hurry to buy unless i find something that grabs me..... i have in mind what i want, i do want a VA panel as they have much better black levels than IPS, they are the best panels for that behind OLED with contrast ratios of 3000:1 or even 4000:1 where as IPS seem to top out at 1000:1 and to me look washed-out in comparison.

VA have black smearing, in some scenes yes they can be smeary during motion, my current panel is like that, but it is a first gen VA, i'm sure newer VA panels still have it but to what extent? Just because it has it making that a reason to dismiss it is not at all helpful to me as i'm ok with it but if there are panels that are better for it than mine then its worth considering, almost no one it seems wants to talk about it other than it existing and therefore BOOOO... "look at this IPS next to it it doesn't do it" ok sure but next to the VA the image on that IPS looks like a blotchy grey background with some water colour on it. No comment on that? what... nothing at all?

I did recently find one review of a Samsung G6 VA panel, he did make the point that its the first time he's seen a VA panel that didn't have any black smearing, or any game smearing at all.... great! Is this a new VA panel type? is this the only one or are there more out there?

PS: why oh why are almost all large (32 inch) VA panels curved? i'm not joking 95% of them are, i don't get it, you don't have this problem looking at IPS screens most on them are not curved, what is it about VA panels that makes manufactures think you would only buy them if they are curved? No.... don't want a curved panel.

Talking about reviews, I was recently looking at a monitor review at the rainforest, and all was looking good until I realized that the review was for a completely different model to the one I was looking at. Why do they lump different model reviews on the specific model I am looking at? Its not useful at all

Ah yes.... noticed this too, not just with monitors but all kinds of products.

It certainly is a minefield. Just try and avoid the biased reviews.

Just have to do plenty of research from various reputable sites etc and work it out from there.

Took me ages to decide on a monitor.

Right, its really important, you can have the best GPU on earth getting all the smooth frames but if the screen you're looking at doesn't make the game look great then you're not going to be a happy gamer.

And there is a lot to learn about specifications if you're trying gage what the image is like without seeing it.

Colour depth.
Colour gamut.
Brighness.
Contrast ratio.
GTG response time.
Backlit vs edgelit.
Local dimming zones
Backlight strobing
Characteristics of different panel types.....

Once you understand most of this stuff you're a good way there to getting what you would like but beyond that not all panels with similar specifications are equal, that's where you need good reviewers who know what they are talking about to tell you how good the panel is at what you're looking for.

This really annoys me with Amazon. The reviews are on the product, not the manufacturer, yet they can group them according to manufacturer.

Their search engine is also absolutely terrible. You put in criteria and it can completely ignore that and present you with page after page of monitors that don't meet any of the criteria you put in.

This is why outlets like Overclockers are so much better.

Getting back to the thread, reviewers also tend to concentrate on top of the line monitors, ignoring the stuff that most people actually buy.
