Monitor says 'out of range' - what does this indicate

HI all

hope somoen can help please. Have purchased a 2nd hand Dell Dimension 3100 off OCUK forums for my boss at work. Initially it wouldn't boot but reset the cmos and now boots, when it goes to XP loading screen with the bars moving side to side after about 5 seconds the screen shuts down and monitor displays 'out of range' message.

What does this indicate? where should i be looking at to resolve this issue. Apologies if this is a dumb question.

Either the resolution trying to be displayed is too big, or the refresh rate is too high.
