Monitor Selection

Hi all,

I'm back in the UK now and left my two old Samsung monitors with a friend in Oz.

I'm looking at gradually upgrading my entire system (apart from the GFX card) as I have the itch. The main computer is currently sailing the oceans somewhere; but I'd like to have the monitor solution sorted for its arrival (plus I'm getting fed up of playing games on my laptop screen).

I'm thinking of going with a 3 monitor solution utilising at least 26 inch monitors at either 1080 or 1200 (one of my monitors was 1200, one was 1080). Firstly; is 1200 supported as a main resolution or is the 1080 image just stretched to suit?

I've not experienced 100+hz monitors; are they mainly of benefit to fps games or everything (including films etc)? I'm more of an MMO player but would like to get into race sims etc. Would a 100hz panel be worthwhile?

Suggestions for the best "gamer" monitor for this setup (normal and 100hz). I'd like as thin a bezel as possible.

I assume 4k is not really going to take off (from an economical point of view) for at least 3 years?

Cheers,

- Matt

Hi there,

Might not be the best "gamer' monitor but the new 24" Dell Ultrasharp (U2414H) has the thinest bezel you will find - 6mm.
I got mine the other week and plan to get another 2 for triple monitor setup.

BF4 looks pretty amazing and there is no ghosting from what I can see. Monitor is based on IPS Panel with 8ms G2G. It is only 1080 not 1200 but if you want the thinest bezels, then this is deffo the monitor to go for.

What GFX have you got and do you plan to game on all 3 (surround)?

Hi Tom,

I'd be aiming to game on all three. My issue at the moment is that I believe we're approaching a cross-over in the industry standard from 1080@60hz up to either multi-monitors, higher resolution/refresh rate or even 4k. My last set of monitors lasted me around 6 years, so I'm trying to back the future-proof option; and not have to go through this process and expense again in 2 years or so.

I'm used to 26/27 inch monitors, so would be worried about dropping down to 24.

My rig is set for a serious upgrade and is still based on the i7 920 (along with many others on these forums by the look of it); but I did buy a GTX Titan as a treat earlier in the year. I'm hoping the 6gb of memory will come into its own compared with the 780ti when this transition to higher resolution occurs.

Obviously the issue with the higher resolutions is needing the GFX grunt to power it. I'm hoping the Titans will come down in price somewhat and that I can pick up another for SLI if needed (which would hopefully last me for 2-4 years).

Reading over the posts on this forum, I think there are several others in the same boat - there is clearly not an obvious choice at the moment (at least for those that don't know the industry inside and out).
