Monitor setup/calibration (settings)

Never in my life I have set up or touched monitor settings and it seems I have been missing out
What am I looking to do with the screen? Is there a basic rundown of which settings to adjust?
Or perhaps someone has a perfect setting for a benq XL2420T?
Trying to see weather I should bother or not

If you want your monitors to be correct buy a calibrator.

To get them reasonable try sites like http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

spend the money on a calibrator otherwise you could be doing more harm than good otherwise.

I have one and I wish I had bought one sooner. I use DisplayCAL which is freeware as it's better than the bundled software.

Anyone tried the free THX app that claims to be able to do this stuff for TVs etc, in conjunction with a smartphone?
