Monitor Sound Issue

Just set up my new Z35p upgrading from an Asus PB287Q and despite replacing the cables like for like no sound is coming from my desktop speakers now,only from the Monitor speakers.Monitor is connected with the Displayport lead same as the old one and even though it shows up my Desktop Speakers in the sound properties options,I just cannot get sound from them.Am I missing something obvious ??

Yeah,switched on plugged in exactly as they were but no sound at all.If I play a song for example in itunes then there is no sound,switch to the monitors speakers and voila
