Monitor suggestion for 1650 super?

My son has made some money on crypto, and is considering getting a new monitor (he's jealous of my 35" ultrawide :D)

He currently has an AOC I2369VM (1080p/60hz IPS), and ideally would like a 27"/1440p, high refresh rate (e.g. 120/144hz).

Problem is, he only has a 1650 super, and given the current availability of cards, is unlikely to be able to upgrade any time soon.

I'm guessing he isn't going to be running much at 1440p/144hz with that card, although he does play mostly older games - e.g. Roblox, Minecraft, Just Cause 3/4 although does join us for the odd game of PUBG, Deep Rock Galactic, L4D2, Valheim occasionally.

It's potentially worth going for one anyway with a view to upgrading in future (a monitor usually lasts through several builds), but obviously don't want to end up with a worse experience due to the blurriness from running at non-native res?

Don't really want to suggest a 27" 1080p monitor, as I had one before and the pixels were clearly visible - and he almost certainly has better eyesight than me!

Maybe 1080p ultrawide is an option? Or is running at non-native res no longer an issue with newer monitor tech?

Edit: would a 27" 4k screen be better? Obviously no chance of running at native on that, but 1080p being exactly half the resolution of 4k would scale better?

Cheers!

A 1650 Super will average around 60fps for most of those games at 2560x1080 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuitmPOas8w

1080p downscaled on a 4K monitor does not look very good so I would not recommend that route either.

1440p is certainly doable and most games play quite well - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MThEONNGamM

My personal opinion is to get a 1440p 144hz monitor and lower a few settings until he can get a beefier card to max out those games.

Thanks, that makes sense - I guess 1440p is also better for future proofing - he's unlikely to get a 4k card anytime soon, but 1440p is within the realms of reality in the next couple of years (assuming the market restores some semblance of normality :/)
