well its been seven years since my first post which was asking what monitor to get. and the benq from then has died a while ago and ive been making do with a tv since lol.

So i've been thinking about one of these new superwidescreen monitors are worth it?

budget wise would like to keep it at under £500 mainly for desktop stuff and games.

so whats the best option folks?

and should i go with the superwidescreen or a more traditional one.

I don't have any experience on the 21:9 monitors performance-wise, but I would like to make sure you're aware of the 21:9 aspect ratio's size compromises you'll have to make.

The 29" models are fairly cheap, but their height corresponds to a 23" 16:9 monitor. Whereas the cheapest 34" 21:9 model is the LG Flatron 34UM65-P for £500, which just barely fits in your budget. That one's height corresponds to a 27" 16:9 monitor.

There are also quite a few new 2560x1440 27" monitors around the £300-350 range, which might also be of interest.

If you're not in a hurry, you could wait and see how the Freesync monitors start off. Though it might take anywhere from few weeks to few months, maybe even more.

Well I have the LG 34UM65 and use it for mainly desktop stuff as you say and games (and movies) and I love it. I also have a 27 inch 1440p for my macbook pro which is very nice looking resolution wise, nice sharp pictures and fonts etc.

But for games and movies I would go with the LG every time, the field of view is brilliant. As aatu said the comparative price for the ultra wides maybe just isn't quite there yet. If you were determined to spend the full of your budget then you won't be disappointed with the 34 LG but you can pick up a very good 1440p 27 inch for £300.
