Hi,

Is it possible to monitor the total broadband usage through a router including wireless devices etc. ?

My son has just signed up for a BT package with 20GB a month limit and is getting constant messages from BT after only a few days that he is at or close to the limit. There are only two of them in the house and they are both out all day, apart from weekends, so it looks like something is wrong. They have one desktop, one laptop, one tablet and two mobile phones and they are not constantly, if ever, downloading movies. BT has told then they used 8GB last week-end and they are not aware of downloading anything significant.

Is there a free simple to use programme that can track all usage through the router to ensure that all data usage up and down is captured?

I don't have BT but you could monitor the connected devices to your wireless to ensure nobody else is using it (try making it properly secure as it's very important). But generally, 20GB is very low by today's standard. I could watch a 1080p YouTube video that's over 1GB very easily.

Upgrade to unlimited.

20GB is nothing.

Unless you spend a fair bit on a decent router, you can't tell how much/where it's being used. Probably just things like Youtube.

Upgrade to unlimited, it's £12.60 a month for unlimited with BT

I bet they are using youtube or streaming sites a lot. So many people dont seem to grasp just how bandwidth intensive these sites are. My o/h hadnt even considered that sky on demand even used our internet connection for example, i dont think people "get" streaming.
