Hi guys,

Bit of a summary:
Have a valve Index which works fine with my pc specs below. Main monitor was a Zowie 2546 24" monitor.Starting SteamVR, both devices appear fine. Display shows desktop, HMD shows Steamhome

Received a new monitor to replace the Zowie.. an Alienware AW3424DW and while it works with the PC.. noticed the monitor would flicker every couple min (slow flicker as it turn black for 5s before reconnecting) as if it was searching for an input. Connecting my work laptop to the monitor is fine.. no flickers.. but that's not the main issue so will sort that later, though if any of you have suggestions, advice appreciated.

AW monitor running natively at 175hz with gsync enabled, DP connected.. but when i start SteamVR, monitor turns black while the HMD is fine. This can be a pain especially if i quit VR within the HMD, it seems the GPU doesn't switch the output back to the monitor, leaving me having to manually reset the PC to bring the monitor back up.

After a bit of fiddling with the nvidia settings, i thought i found the issue. I reduced the resolution of the monitor as well as the refresh rate from native to 2560x1440@144hz and started Steam VR. Both monitor and HMD displayed correctly and so the monitor didn't turn off.. but still that can't be right. It would still be ultra annoying resetting monitor back to native after every VR session, and reducing resolution every time i start VR.

Further fiddling with the settings with the monitor at native, i somehow managed to temporarily break the HMD. The HMD would blink red super fast and after a bit of googling, it seemed to fail on a wireless receiver firmware update/display cable not connected/HMD failing to startup. No matter what i did, the HMD wouldn't start up properly. It would power on before it would turn off again flicking red. I tried everything you would typically do apart from reinstalling drivers or rolling drivers back to an older version.

While you might think, must be a display driver issue, i thought the same, but i'm not so sure now. I decided to disonnect the AW monitor and reconnect my Zowie. Reset HMD USB drivers etc and restarted SteamVR. HMD started working with the monitor staying on displaying the Desktop.

i've had this issue before when i was running a Radeon card, but now i'm running a 3080FE, i don't know how to fix this.

Either it is a driver issue or SteamVR/Index doesn't like the AW monitor because resolution and refresh rate too high. Any settings i should be looking at to resolve this.

Thanks

Try a different display port cable, get a cable that supports Display port standard 1.4.

all of my cables are 1.4 standard.. but the issue still persists. I tried about 4 cables last night.. all with the same issue.

It just sounds like a cable/display port issue. When you reduced the resolution and refresh rate things worked. That's a classic sign of a cable problem.

Have you tried disabling Gsync on the monitor?

hmm guess i'll have to replace the extenders.. enabling/disabling GSync makes no difference. Just seems to flicker more often. Then move back to my 1920x1080@240hz monitor is fine.. sigh

Why is it so hard looking for decent angled extenders

Thanks. I had a look but unfortunately they are too big.

Decided to try a ocuple of these:

Due to the way i built my rig, i only have about 50mm space between the back of the card to the end of the case, meaning the DP cable must be no fatter than 40mm to squeeze in.. hence the use of right angled extenders/up angled cables. That is a disadvantage when you build something aesthetically pleasing but painful to maintain.

sorry a bit difficult to explain. On the third picture on the amazon link you referenced, the body where is says is 42mm long. Couple that with bending the cable at an angle would be 50mm+ and so will not fit in my rig.

The first link i referenced, i'm still 50/50 whether that will fit, even if the body is slightly shorter

Post 13 image 2, that's the amount of space i have to work with
