Spent quite some time doing research on monitors and have nailed down a few options, but would appriciate input and thoughts on those that I've chosen.
Firstly, my ideal budget would be ~£500 or less, but I have an uper limit of £1000 if there is something absolutely worth spending the money on.
My use cases are about 50/50 work / game. My work means I have large sections to static UI showing for 8+ hours of the day. As for games, I mostly play FF14 and Satisafactory. I'm too old for esports games
If it matters, I'm currently running a 3700x and an RTX 3080 FE, but am also considering an upgrade to a 5800X3D in the near future.
My current monitor is a BenQ EX3203R 32" running at 2560x1440 @ 120Hz. I bought it second hand and it's been great for the three years I've owned it, but has a couple of major downsides which have always bugged me:
- It has a relatively slow VA panel which leads to severe ghosting
- It's got a 1800R curve, which was fine at the time, but is giving me issues in my day job where I work on CAD
My PC is used in a well lit room, I don't use it with the lights off.
Here are the monitors I've shortlisted:
1) LG 32GP850-B - 32" 1440P IPS
+ IPS so no ghosting
+ Well reviewed
+ Within budget
+ 1440P so lower load on my GPU than 4K
~ Low pixel density (92PPI), but matches the pair of 27" 1080P screens I use to the left of the main screen
- Typical IPS poor contrast ratio
2) LG 32GP950-B - 32" 4K IPS
+ IPS so no ghosting
+ Well reviewed
+ Higher pixel density (138PPI)
- Well over budget
- 4k so more load on my GPU than 1440P
- Typical IPS poor contrast ratio
3) LG C2 42" OLED
+ OLED speed, contrast + other benefits
+ Very well reviewed
+ Good pixel density between 1 & 2
~ "Control" of TV through PC is fiddly, but workable
- Well over budget
- 4k so more load on my GPU than 1440P
- Text clarity questions due to WRGB
- OLED burn-in / non-uniform wearing
4) Alienware AW3423DW
+ OLED speed, contrast + other benefits
+ Very well reviewed
+ Ultrawide
+ Good pixel density between 1 & 2
+ 3 year Dell warranty covers "burn in"
~ OLED burn-in / non-uniform wearing
- Curved, but being an ultrawide, I wonder if it will be as bad
- WELL over budget
- Text clarity questions due to weird triangular subpixel layout
I'm more than happy to hear opinions on any monitors people feel are worth suggesting, as well as any critiques about my current choices
