I've currently got a Dell U2412M 24" monitor which I mainly game on (as well as the occasional work stuff). I've recently upgraded my GPU to an EVGA 780GTX. Would I now benefit from a 1440 monitor? I've been reading some of the threads here and the 27" AOC seems to be well liked.

After a false start in buying a new monitor last year I'm now looking at upgrading again.
I mainly game so would I be better upgrading to a 27" 1440 monitor, a 24" 144Hz monitor or should I just stick with what I've got? The monitor is the only thing I could upgrade to satisfy my upgrade-itis

Your Dell U2412M is still pretty sweet. Personally I wouldnt upgrade it just yet untill more 144Hz IPS type monitors take hold.
If you buy a 144hz monitor now it will be a TN panel and wont look nearly as nice image quality wise, not by a long shot. If you have to upgrade now, personally I would go for a 27" or 32" IPS 1440p monitor, but thats just my own personal preference.
There is no ideal monitor out right now, although we are getting pretty close to it
