Monitor Upgrade?

I'm considering upgrading my current monitor, it's a Callisto something or other that we got years back. Max res if 1280 x 1024.

My first question is will my rig scale well at higher res, for example I'm getting a solid 60 fps on Skyrim with a few tweaks at my current res. I don't mind losing a few frames, so long as it's playable.

Currently got an i3 2100 and a GTX 550Ti, I was planning to upgrade the graphics card later this year if that's any help.

If you go for a 1080p or 1200p monitor then a GTX 550Ti will do pretty well with games like skyrim. Here is an article that looks at the performance of different cards (including the 550Ti) in skyrim at different settings and resolutions.
