Monitor Vs HD Telly

Hi all, as the title really, my friend recently hooked his PC up to a Toshiba 1080p HDTV, but the picture is quite grainy (eg. text on desktop) compared to a dedicated monitor - just wondering why this is, as they are both LCD?

DVI on both counts, TV model not that important, as I have seen this a few times - desktop icons/text looks grainy compared to a monitor, almost like it were a CRT.

Thought it might be something to do with pixel mapping or the decoding hardware onboard the TV?

Not sure if that helps much, any suggestions?
